The Art of the Boozy Brunch in Melbourne

By Iro Kotsimbos - 06 Feb 2015

Melburnians are one heck of a breakfast mad bunch. Seriously, every time we write about a new contender for best breakfast in Melbourne, the response is a little crazy (but then again, we don’t blame you!).

But whatcha gonna do if it’s just a little too early to stomach a plate of scrambles, some bacon and a piece of butter-laden toast, but you just can’t wait until lunch to get a feed? Ahhh, it really is one of life’s greatest #firstworldproblems.

This, my friends, is where the glorious boozy brunch comes in.

The boozy brunch is a way of life overseas, especially in the States, with cafes doing a roaring trade in between the traditional breakfast and lunch rushes. Everything from pancakes and waffles, to fritters and fry-ups are made that much better with the addition of a glass of sparkling or a good ol’ Bloody Mary.

But what about the boozy brunch in Melbourne? Ohhh yes, dear Listers, it’s on its way up!

Speakeasy Kitchen Bar in South Yarra is one of the smart café cookies out there who have tapped into the boozy brunch culture, now opening Monday-Friday from 7:00am, Saturday from 8:00am and Sunday from 9:00am. While indulging in a tipple as early as 7:00am isn’t a great idea, waiting until the brunch action gets underway at Speakeasy most certainly is!

Maybe it’s to do with their name (I mean really, with a name that references the intimate drinking dens of the 1920s, it’s a no brainer) or maybe it’s because they’ve got a killer menu – whatever it is, Speakeasy are onto a good thing and we’re hella excited.

Keen to see what all the fuss was about, we headed to Speakeasy to indulge in some boozy brunch goodness. Sweet tooths will be well satisfied with the rose water poached rhubarb and pear served with organic yogurt, coconut, almonds, pistachio and mint. The classic French toast is also absolutely killer – in addition to maple syrup and fresh berries, the French toast also comes with nutella mascarpone. DROOOOL.

Melbourne brunch fiends looking for something more savoury are also well catered for – the classic smashed avo and feta and harissa and chorizo scrambled eggs our top picks. Are you more of a fritter fan? Well get excited, because Speakeasy's famous zucchini and feta fritters are now back on the menu!!

But what about the all-important boozy brunch tipple? Well, Listers, Speakeasy's drinks menu doesn't disappoint. If you prefer to go down the classy option, might we suggest a glass of NV Pommery Brut or NV Underground Brut? Perhaps it's more a 'huge sunnies to hide the night before' type situation. If so, the Smoked Tomato Bloody Mary with house smoked passata, pickle infused vodka, cajun spice, Worcestershire, Tabasco and celery, is sure to sort you out. After all, isn't getting back on the horse the best cure for a hangover?

So Listers, we’re going to be all controversial and suggest maybe throwing in the towel on breakfast for the moment. With a super tasty menu and sweet drinks list, a boozy Melbourne brunch at Speakeasy is pretty damn hard to say no to!
