The holidays are so close we can practically taste them, and we’re sure for many of you, it’s going to be a time to relax, unwind, and let it all hang out. Now, the idea of a nude beach may cause you to giggle at first, but if you can think of a better example of freedom than standing naked on a white sandy beach and diving into crystal clear water then we’ll eat our hat. Best of all, no pesky tan lines from convoluted swimming costumes! The number of clothing-optional beaches is ever increasing globally, but there are some great ones in Australia that are yours for the strolling. Finish this year, or start the next one, on a high note by strutting your stuff in the buff at one of these beaches.
Maslins Beach, Adelaide, Australia
Australia’s oldest legal nude beach is one of the most popular destinations for local and visiting naturists. Maslins is particularly awesome because they’re not afraid to have a little fun, as once a year they host the Pilwarren Maslin Beach Nude Games. The day includes a Best Bum competition, frisbee throwing, three-legged race, water balloon throwing, baton race, donut eating competition, and sack races. Lol, sack races…
Haulover Beach, Florida, USA
Affectionately nicknamed America’s Riviera, Haulover beach embraces the Mediterranean lifestyle on its clothing-optional beach. This beach draws enough of a crowd to warrant lifeguards for those who like to roam free but be safe at the same time, and the only white pointers you’re likely to see are harmless. The weather is pretty beautiful all year round in Miami, so any time is a good time to get your kit off at this beach.
Le Grottes Plage, Costa Azul, France
It’s suggested that the naturist lifestyle was founded in Ile du Levant, a short stroll from Le Grottes Plage. Now it’s one thing to lie on a beach nude, or dive into the turquoise blue water of the Mediterranean starkers, but being naked has become such a way of life around here that there are plenty of restaurants that allow you to dine sans clothes as well. Oh la la indeed.
Wreck Beach Vancouver, Canada
O Canada, you really know how to come up with the goods. This clothing-optional beach spans approximately 7km; now that’s a lot of space for naked cartwheeling. North America’s largest nudist beach is only 15 minutes away from downtown Vancouver, so if you’ve had enough of city living, you’re only a quick drive and a disrobe away from leaving it all behind.
Alexandria Bay, Noosa, Australia
If you like to live a little more on the wild side, trek through Noosa’s National Park and eventually you’ll arrive at Alexandria Bay. Technically, Queensland is the only Australian state yet to legalise nude beaches, however A-Bay is well known for its nudie visitors, so don’t be too concerned about being caught red handed and bare bummed.
Plakias Beach, Crete, Greece
On the coast of southern Crete lies Plakias beach, and if you want to strip down and even out those tan lines, head to the east side of the beach and find your fellow naked flock. Other than being an excellent place to get around in the nuddy, Plakias beach is also a well known scuba diving and snorkeling spot. Is it just us, or does swimming naked amongst the fishes sound kind of heavenly?
Abricó Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Brazil’s official nude beach only became legal in 2003, and since then there hasn’t been a stitch of clothing in sight at Abrico Beach. It’s no secret that Brazilians prefer to wear swimmers containing as little fabric as possible; a meander down Ipanema beach will reveal women of every shape and age sporting a g-banger. Obviously, being nearly naked is nowhere near as good as the real thing, so do as the locals do and flaunt that bod of yours.
Ocho Rios, Saint Ann, Jamaica
Jamaica has a few naked-friendly options for those looking to strip down, and our pick would be Ocho Rios. While the beaches are fine to roam around in all your glory, make sure you pack some clothes, as the resorts often enforce dress codes (Hint: the dress code being ‘clothes’). For those looking to party and mingle with other singles, Hedonism is another spot in Jamaica that’s nudist friendly and is exactly as the name suggests.
