The Under the Radar South Yarra Bar To Hit Up This Summer

Urban Listers, it’s so close you can almost taste it. By ‘it’, we’re referring to holidays and all the glorious things they entail – sleep ins, beach time fun, eating like it’s going out of fashion, and sweet, sweet Sunday everyday sessions. If you’re anything like us, you’re currently beside yourself with anticipation.

In our opinion, sussing out your summertime watering hole should be top of your to-do list. Why? Because, priorities. Having a kick ass bar that you can rely on during the summer months is essential – preferably, somewhere that has that elusive mix of laidback vibe, outdoor deck, cool tunes, speedy service and, of course, brilliant food and drinks.

Located amongst the hustle and bustle of Chapel Street, Speakeasy Kitchen Bar is one such venue that ticks all of the ‘kick ass bar’ boxes. Inspired by the drinking dens of the 1920’s prohibition era (but without being too twee….this ain’t no theme park), Speakeasy is the South Yarra bar that we’ll be hitting up this summer. Trust us when we say, this one’s a beauty!

The laidback vibe starts the second you step into Speakeasy Kitchen Bar from busy Chapel Street or via the secret cobbled back alley entrance from Commercial Road. Light, airy and relaxed, Speakeasy features little nods here and there to the era from which it gets its name. Some (aka those with far more eloquent trains of thought) will probably think ‘wow, this is a great place for a drink!’. Us on the other hand, our first thought was ‘hellllooooo summertime sessions! Now where’s my cocktail?!’. Yup, this South Yarra bar makes an excellent first impression.

On that note, the drinks at Speakeasy Kitchen Bar are exactly the type that’ll have you calling out to the waiter for another round. The Cucumber Cooler is zesty yet refreshing, and the namesake Speakeasy Cocktail screams summer. If you’re an Espresso Martini fan, you’re also in for a treat because Speakeasy’s version is absolutely killer. Best enjoyed on the spacious outdoors decking area – the place to be this summer – some of Melbourne’s best cocktails can be found right here.

All that summer sipping calls for a little bit of noshing too (it’s all about balance, right?), and the food at Speakeasy Kitchen Bar doesn’t disappoint. Whether you’ve stopped by for a few lunchtime bevvies, evening drinks with friends, or an all day session, Speakeasy’s kitchen team are ready to deal with your cravings.

We recommend starting with an entrée platter for two and some daily house-made bread before moving on to something a little bigger, such as the squid ink linguine or the super tender pork ribs – both fresh, flavoursome and totally moreish. We also have dreams about their Wagyu beef burger and once you take a bite, you’ll understand why! Keen for a sweet treat to finish? Two words – Malibu Pannacotta. Featuring fresh mango, lychee, lime and pistachio crumble, this baby is THE dessert of summer.

Food, drinks and outdoor decking area aside, Speakeasy Kitchen Bar also has a separate dining room and bar area where you can while away your summer days and nights. Add to that mix some sweet tunes to really get the party started and voila: you have the perfect recipe for a summer of fun!

That’s right Listers, Speakeasy is the coolest South Yarra bar to hit up this summer!
