Dear Listers, this weekend in Melbourne is absolutely chockers with fun things to do! The Melbourne Writers Festival kicks off today, the Glow Winter Arts Festival wraps up and, as always, there's a range of activities and events to keep you entertained (and well fed!).
So, without further ado, tuck in your bib, grab your fork and get stuck into this guide to what's on in Melbourne this weekend.
Get excited, bookworms – Melbourne Writers Festival is back for another year! Running up until the end of the month, the festival brings together novelists, playwrights, poets, screenwriters, journalists, songwriters and bloggers in one massive celebration of the written word. There's a huge range of literary activities, with everything from book banquets to launches running up until the 31st of August.
Where to start? MWF kicks off today with an opening address from Australian literary legend, Helen Garner. A festival exclusive, Helen will discuss her latest book 'This House of Grief', a harrowing account of the trial of Robert Farquharson, convicted of drowning his three sons on Father's Day in 2005. An address not to be missed.
Want to know what else is on? Check out the festival program here.
Melbourne Writers Festival | 21st – 31st August
Go mental for mussels? So do we! Our new favourite Abbotsford establishment, Dr Morse, is dishing up mussels three ways, every Thursday night up until the end of September. The best part? Each type of mollusc is matched with a different beer. Perhaps you like your mussels San Fran-style, cooked in a rich tomato sugo with chorizo and oregano, paired with a Moon Dog Black Lung Stout. Or do the mussels cooked in cider, fennel and saffron, matched with a Hargreaves Hill Hefeweizen, pique your interest? Heck, it sure piques ours! The mussel nights are mighty popular, so reservations are recommended.
Mussel Night | Dr Morse in Abbotsford | From 5pm | $20
