Events this weekend make up a truly Melburnian mix-and-match scene. From music to food, parties to books, there’s plenty on this list to keep you busy and warm, Listers. Check out some of the top things to do in Melbourne this weekend!
Thursday 14th May
CITY OF STONNINGTON JAZZ FESTIVAL
Jazz fans, we know you’re probably feeling a little neglected in the Melbourne arts scene. Your long wait is over, as the City of Stonnington Jazz Festival celebrates its 10-year anniversary this weekend with over 40 events across ten different venues. Expect both traditional and fresh contemporary jazz artists from all around Australia. There’s even some soul music thrown in, to pique the interests of young ones.
For the celebration, a range of restaurants across Prahran, Windsor, Malvern and Armadale will be hosting special deals exclusively for attendees. From cocktail specials to discounted banquets, fill up on these limited-time offers pre or post show. For a full list of Jazz Express restaurant participants, visit the website.
OPEN MIC AT THE RAILWAY HOTEL | WINDSOR
The Railway Hotel in Windsor is hosting open mic nights every Thursday this May. Enjoy the hotel’s fabulous menu on a cold autumn evening and get the blood rushing with (probably) fabulous live entertainment. If singing isn’t really your gig, the team at The Railway is kindly offering 8pm-midnight drink specials to get you to your confident best (worse). $4 Carlton Schooners, $5 Wines, $5 Spirits and $5 Magners Pints are the offers at your desperate disposal.
SYDNEY WRITERS' FESTIVAL TALKS | THE WHEELER CENTRE
The Wheeler Centre will welcome guests from the Sydney Writers’ Festival this month, attracting some of the most internationally acclaimed, brilliant up-and-coming writers. Get excited to listen to Claire Tomalin and Michael Frayn among other talents. You’d better get moving quickly though, tickets for some events are already booked out! As a city with a weakness for a good book, it’s no surprise.
Friday 15th May
OYSTER HAPPY HOUR | SAKE
Melbourne’s infamous contemporary Japanese restaurant, Saké, is hosting weekday oyster happy hours. Post-work + oysters = heaven! From 4pm to 7pm enjoy Saké’s exclusive Cloudy Bay Pelorus Oysters. This is the perfect idea for an after-work gathering, or simply go to indulge yourself in a slippery little treat.
VEGAS AT CROWN
Beloved and extravagant Crown Resorts is bringing Vegas to Melbourne this month. From Crown’s own little chapel of love to roaming entertainers, Crown is getting a very American makeover on Friday and Saturday nights. Visit The Merrywell for roller-skating waitresses and greasy (but delicious) burgers, or the Crown’s Atrium for showgirl performances every hour from 7pm-10pm. The little chapel of love is open from 8pm-10pm, if that’s more your thing.
Saturday 16th May
WANDERLUST 108 | CATANI GARDENS
The mindful Wanderlust triathlon featuring everything relaxing, calming and soul-cleansing is on for one day only! Start the weekend with a charity run to get the blood pumping, before mass meditation and a 90-minute yoga session. Listers, this is the Melbourne event for you if you’re finding yourself in the claws of tension and stress. It’s that time of year, give yourself a break and take the day off.
TERRARIUM MAKING | WORK-SHOP
Back by popular demand, if you missed the Mother’s Day Terrarium making session at Work-Shop with Amy Wong there’s one more session on this Saturday! The Petite Green maker is a mini landscape expert, but judging by how quick the last session sold out you had better jump on the website and snag a ticket soon! Like, now.
GOOD BEER WEEK
It’s that time of year again. When we indulge in endless drinking in the name of festivity and celebration. Yup, Good Beer Week starts this Friday and this year is going to be a boozy one. This year over 250 will squeeze into the nine day celebration to bring you the best of everything beer-y from Australian and international brewers.
HAWKEYE VINTAGE POP-UP | PRAHRAN
If RSVPing to the highly exclusive, VIP Hawkeye designer sale has slipped your mind, don’t despair! The pop-up store will be open to the public this Saturday from 10am-5pm. Given that there are over 100 handbags, scarves and pieces of original jewellery from the likes of Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Dior, I’d be lining up for this one ladies.
Sunday May 17th
MELBOURNE VINTAGE OPENS | BRUNSWICK
Aside from the simplicity of their name, Melbourne Vintage is anything but straightforward. Home to mid-century vintage collectables, this new little store on Sydney Road is guaranteed to be a mecca for preloved items with plenty of life when it opens this weekend. Unique homewares, hi-fi, cameras and of course vintage fashion are just some of the nick knacks this new Melbourne store will have on offer.
BROOKLYN LAGER AT ARBORY BAR & EATERY
Sunday's set to be a cracking autumn day, so we're taking advantage and heading to riverside Arbory Bar & Eatery for their Brooklyn Lager craft beer event, as part of Good Beer Week. Sample the Brooklyn Lager goods and a beer-friendly menu (think Roasted Oysters with lemon, garlic, parsley and parmesan crumbs; or Smoked roll with wood roasted wild mushrooms, shaved pork belly, crackling powder & truffle dressing), while DJs will help the good times roll.
SHARED SUNDAY LUNCH | THE PRINCE | ST KILDA
Circa's shared Sunday lunches at The Prince only runs for one more week! Their second last lunch features McIvor Farm Pork, so piggy lovers (eaters?) gather around. As this event is designed for sharing and caring with a selection of entrees, mains and desserts (for $65pp), this is a lovely idea as the colder months creep in.
That’s what’s on in Melbourne this weekend, folks!
