February is filled with festivals, films, food and free fitness events! In fact, February plays host to a range of free events across the board! We’re talking free music, free art, free theatre, free FRUIT even.

If you’re looking for fun, free things to do in Melbourne, then check out this ripper list of events on this weekend! It’s not all free… but it is all fun! Here’s what’s on in Melbourne!

Thursday 5th

If you like your sips to be slightly spicy and oh so sultry, then head along to the Syrah Sessions Masterclass at The Botanical! Complemented with steak, frites and salad, enjoy exploring the Rhone region, all the way to Australia’s latest and greatest Syrah and Shiraz drops. Swill and sip to your heart’s content, over an evening of intriguing blind tastings and informative (but fun) sessions!

Add some Rulliano Proscuitto di Parma, some aged Parmigiano Reggiano, and a drop or two of unique Northern Italy wine, and you’ve got one heck of a party!

Friday 6th

Get your fill of piazzas, scooters and romance as the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) hosts an exhibition all about Rome on the screen. From past to present, exploring the imaginings of various films, opening night kicks off with a screening of L’amore in Città (Fellini and Antonioni), followed tomorrow by Roman Holiday, a Hepburn classic. So tie on those neck scarves, Listers, and don’t miss out on this iconic series of screenings.

If you were a fan of HBO’s Girls, then you’ll love the latest ‘mumblecore’ film capturing the essence of Melbourne by emerging writer and director, Sophie Townsend. Pretty Good Friends is screening at Testing Grounds in Southbank. If the term ‘mumblecore’ is new to you, scrap your Hollywood expectations, Listers, and tune in for a real-life, grit-and-all representation!

Get into the action with Moonlight Cinema’s screening of Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead tonight. What makes it so exciting? It’s a dress up theme. That’s right. Head down with your picnic rugs, blankets, and… zombie get up! This zombie horror flick may just be scarier than the zombies sitting next to you, but that depends on how dedicated your fellow guests’ dress up efforts are!

Saturday 7th

Get a bit of free culture this weekend in Melbourne, with City of Stonnington’s Opera in the Park! Love, Lust and Longing will feature a range of acclaimed singers, including Cheryl Barker and John Heuzenroeder. Held in the beautiful Victoria Gardens in Prahran, this stunning free event is open to all to appreciate!

Help Step into Life celebrate 20 years of #fitspo, with a fantastic fitness party at Fed Square! The Fitness N.O.W. Looking for more fun things to do in Melbourne this Saturday? Shake things up a bit and check out Southgate promenade’s SummerSalt Outdoor Arts Festival. Yup, you heard us, and we’re pretty sure you’re as stoked as us to hear that the Royal Exhibition Building will host this slamming event. Experience some great Slavic songs, dances, food and drink, and activities galore! Peruse an exhibition of Slavic painters living in Australia, or sit back and appreciate some malt and hops in the Beer Garden! Flip your normal routine around a bit this weekend, and go get some pancakes!

This weekend is your absolute last chance to catch the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition at the NGV in Melbourne, Listers! Closing tomorrow, tonight the NGV are offering extended hours, staying open until midnight to offer visitors a chance to catch this ripper fashion exhibition. Get on it, team!

Sunday 8th

Sunday sessions are set with DAYDREAMS at Dr Morse in Abbotsford. After doing the rounds of Melbourne's party circuit, the DAYDREAMS crew will now base themselves at Dr Morse - hell yeah! DAYDREAMS is all about having a blast on Sundays, featuring cocktail specials and $5 'mystery bottles' in one of Melbourne's best beer gardens, some sweet tunes courtesy of the best local DJs, plenty of beer and free fruit! Get ready to dance long into the night cos this is definitely one of Melbourne's best Sunday sessions!

Want to stick to the best things to do in Melbourne? Then skewer some delicious action at the Queen Victoria’s Sunday Market, Sticky Fingers! Sit back and enjoy a soothing (serenaded) sip at the Two Brothers Brewery beer garden while you’re at it.

Today is the culmination of nine days of cultural, artistic and musical expression with The St Kilda Festival! It’s the epic finale, festival Sunday! Politician faux pas aside, if you love a drop of Grange, then don’t miss Eleven40 Gallery’s exhibition of Milton Wordley’s ‘A Year in the Life of Grange’. Based around his successful book, this exhibit is joined with an event this afternoon that is the perfect match for wine lovers! Participate in a Shiraz and Syrah Masterclass with Jack Mullard from the Tasting Table, traversing through a blind tasting of European and Australian reds, and accompanied with (can we say hell yeah) charcuterie plates!

Get excited for some free live music in Melbourne! The NGV has collaborated with Mushroom to bring you a series of Sundays in summer, that will host a free, outdoor musical festival featuring some fantastic local bands and DJs. Set up at the NGV International’s garden, see acts such as Lanie Lane, Husky, Alpine and more! Tonight you’ll be rocking to World’s End Press, Slum Social and I Oh You DJs! The only things Melbournians love more than live and local, is live, local, and free! Sweet gig(s).
