Two Minutes with Sara Donaldson | Harper & Harley

By Iro Kotsimbos - 02 Apr 2014

Sara Donaldson is one heck of a stylish girl – not only is she a full-blown blogging superstar (Sara's site Harper & Harley is one of Australia's best fashion blogs) and Sales & Marketing Manager for Australian jewellery label MANIAMANIA, Sara is also one of the six Australian ambassadors for Uniqlo.

With Australia's first Uniqlo store at Emporium Melbourne only two weeks from opening, we stole two minutes of Sara's time to talk blogging, fashion, and why she's so excited about Uniqlo's arrival.

TUL: Describe in one sentence what you do for work?

I'm a fashion blogger and digital marketing strategist focusing on curating and building a black, white and grey wardrobe.

TUL: How did you get started in fashion?

I've always known that I wanted to work in the industry and it's honestly about putting yourself out there and following your dreams. Starting my blog was the first step followed by an internship at a fashion label in Brisbane. I then made the move down to Sydney and worked at Westfield for two years before taking a role at MANIAMANIA, all while maintaining my blog!

TUL: What does a typical day look like for you?

Right now I'm spending the day at the MANIAMANIA office and then blogging at night and on weekends, however I'll soon be moving on and running Harper & Harley full time. That said, a usual day includes lots of emails, product coordination, social media marketing, content creation and planning.

TUL: How did you decide on the name Harper & Harley?

I love those names and still do which I'm pretty happy about since Harper & Harley is now over five years old. Harper is the chic girl and Harley is more edgy – I feel like I sit in the middle of the two parallels.

TUL: How did the role with Uniqlo come about?

It all started with a surprise phone call asking if I was interested working with the brand, and of course my answer was yes! To sit alongside the other ambassadors (actress Sophie Lowe, pro golfer Adam Scott, chef Andrew McConnell, sailor Jessica Watson and street artist Rone) is such a humbling experience as well as they're all masters in their own field.

TUL: What does the role entail?

Firstly I'll be attending the official launch in mid-April, which I'm really excited about. I'm also looking forward to sharing and educating my Australian readers who may not have heard of or visited a Uniqlo store overseas that Uniqlo is different from the other fast fashion stores that it's sometimes classified as. Uniqlo doesn't focus on trends, but rather produces well made garments at an affordable price point that cater to building a wardrobe you can wear for years to come, instead of just the one season.

TUL: What is it that you love about Uniqlo?

We share the same passion about building the perfect wardrobe of quality basics. It's a match made in heaven.

TUL: Which new season trends do you think Uniqlo have nailed this Autumn/Winter?

It's less about trends and more about what we really need this Autumn/Winter. Uniqlo have nailed the perfect jean in my eyes; I'm currently living in a pair of their charcoal stretch denim jeans.

TUL: Are there any other pieces that you're dying to get your hands on?

I want their entire range of silk button up shirts!

TUL: What are the top five pieces you think every girl needs from Uniqlo?

Definitely a pair of Uniqlo's 'Ultra Stretch' denim jeans in charcoal, a black silk shirt, white silk shirt and chambray denim shirt, as well as a cashmere knit.

TUL: What are your favourite Uniqlo pieces for the guys?

I can't wait to start dressing my boyfriend in their button up shirts – they're the perfect shape and fit for a nice dinner out.

TUL: What's next for you?

I'm excited to give Harper & Harley my full attention, so there will be a little bit more travel on the cards, but not too much. Australia has always been my biggest readership, so as long as that remains the same I'm more than happy to keep as grounded as possible.
