What to Check Out at The Emerging Writers’ Festival

By Clare Acheson
18th May 2015

So, you want to write? Or maybe you’re all about the end product and love nothing more than curling up with a good book, or catching up on your favourite blog (you know, the one with actual words instead of just endless reams of celeb gifs?). No matter what your connection to the written word might be, the Emerging Writers’ Festival has a little something for everyone. Here’s our top picks of what to catch at the annual event, which starts later this month.

The Good Copy: Nuts and Bolts

Grammar Nazis and wannabe punctuation nerds, get yourselves along to Nuts and Bolts, a primer on everything grammar by too-cool-for-school Collingwood writing hub The Good Copy. Run by The Good Copy’s founders, this is the event that will keep on giving, whether it’s in the form of writing perfect emails or simply correcting your friends’ dodgy Facebook comments.

6pm, Thursday 28th May | The Good Copy, Collingwood

Up Late with Archer

If you read 50 Shades and thought, “Pffft, I could do better,” you’ll love sex and sexuality magazine Archer’s Up Late event, which promises to tackle the raunchier side of literary life, as well as topics to do with identity and gender. Promiscuous prose and the odd breathless live reading? Phwoar, count me in!

Zine Making Workshop

Fancy your chances at starting a publishing revolution? The Emerging Writers’ Festival’s zine workshop, run by Cameron Baker of Mote mag, will give you all the skills you need. Better yet, you can fit this one into a lunchbreak. Get creative, folks!

Late Night Lit: Kill Your Darlings – Nerds Gone Wild

That title doesn’t explain ANYTHING, does it?! Nerds Gone Wild brings together six local writers and creatives to dispel the myth that all writers are cool as f#¢k as they share their secret daggy obsessions. Expect a lot of nervous laughter, awkward silences and nerding out.

The School of Life: Writing as Therapy

There’s a reason why people keep journals, and it’s about more than looking cool while sipping a cold drip. Writing can be a great source of relief when you’re stressed out—getting all your thoughts down on paper stops them from jumbling up inside your head—and this School of Life seminar aims to teach you just that.

Closing Party with Ladies of Leisure

What’s a festival without a closing party?! The final Emerging Writers’ Festival event of the season will include readings, DJ sets and drinks, all hosted by the Ladies of Leisure zine, who are self-proclaimed amazing ladies who reserve enough time to get things done, while still finding time for a martini or five. Now that’s a manifesto we can get with.
