Is there anything better than a big dirty steak sandwich? Nope. Yet for some reason, the humble old steak sambo can often be viewed as a bit of a boring menu choice. We are here to tell you that it is most definitely not. Steak sandwiches are delicious, comforting and oh so satisfying.
So here are 12 of the best spots to get your steak sambo fix in Perth.
The Harbour Master
The Harbour Master was awarded WA’s best steak sandwich last year, so put it at the top of your list. Their take on this classic is a succulent piece of Wagyu rump steak topped with balsamic onions, cheddar cheese, maple bacon, cos lettuce, tomato and aioli, all sitting in between two deliciously crusty pieces of panini. And its served with rustic fries, crunchy Cajun slaw and a bunch sauces. Yep, let’s go immediately.
The Merrywell's smokewich steak sandwich is quite a sight to behold. Smoked thinly-cut scotch fillet, pickle onion slaw, grilled onions, fried green tomato, BBQ sauce all encased in a toasty sourdough, with some BBQ spiced onion rings on the side.
Yes, Manjimup is a bit of a drive, but you’ll thank us when you get there. Tall Timbers has received awards for its steak sanga, and it’s easy to see why—it involves marinated Black Angus sirloin steak with caramelised red onions, BBQ sauce from Cherry Valley Farm and hand cut chips.
Northbridge Brewing Co
Northbridge Brewing aims to make people happy, and they’re succeeding with their steak sandwich. Why? Because not only does it include succulent fillet steak, lettuce, dirty onions and house ketchup—but you can also add BEER CHEESE. Who thought to combine these two wonderful things? We take our hat off to you.
PICA Bar has to be one of the best spots in Perth for a good dose of people watching, and what better way to take part in this sport than with a steak sanga and a pint. Their steak sandwich is served on a Turkish bun with bacon, cheddar, onion jam and aioli and it comes with a generous serving of fries. Plus, it's only $7 to add a glass of wine or a pint.
The Generous Squire
The Generous Squire’s steak sambo is not for the faint-hearted. It’s a triple layered sandwich with twin sirloin, bacon, tomato, fried egg, porter braised onions, creamy house aioli and beetroot jam. Wear your stretchy pants.
Karalee On Preston
Karalee in Como has kicked some serious goals with their Black Angus steak sandwich. The Black Angus is served with crispy bacon, Swiss cheese, marinated tomato, rocket and caramelised onion, all sitting on Turkish bread with homemade porcini mushroom BBQ sauce and chips.
Again, Mundaring isn’t exactly nearby for many of us, but you’ll be happy you made the trip when you try Mundaring Hotel’s grain fed Black Angus steak burger. The juicy piece of steak is marinated in BBQ sauce, Jack Daniels and Cola (don’t knock it 'til you’ve tried it) and complimented with bacon, American smoky cheese, onion marmalade, roast pepper aioli, shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes and served with chips. Get the car.
The Village Bar
The team at The Village have got the classic steak sandwich sorted—theirs involves balsamic onion jam, melted cheese, greens and tomatoes all on sourdough with chips on the side. Can’t go wrong, can you?
The people at The Queens know a thing or two about good pub grub, and that’s evident with their steak sandwich. Dry-rubbed rump steak, mesculin, beetroot, tomato, cheese, smoky chipotle and beer battered chips. Winning.
The South Beach Hotel
The South Beach Hotel is an institution and the team here does a mean steak sambo of black brook beef, served on Abhi’s Bakery organic Turkish bread, with Swiss cheese, tomato, red onion relish, creamy slaw and crunchy fries.
The Garden has perfected the classic steak sandwich, serving it with cheese, rocket, tomato, balsamic onions, dijonaise and fries. Simple, yet effective.
