We were ready for summer, like, in October… days spent by the ocean and evenings sipping an Aperol Spritz, what could be better? There’s just something about stepping off the beach and into your favourite bar to watch the sunset with your best friends. Hashtag instant vacation.
But with sun-kissed skin and afternoons spent rolling around in the sand comes parched skin, frizzy tresses and wardrobe malfunctions. If balmy afternoons spent by the ocean leave you feeling sweaty, sticky and less than fresh… Avoid the detour on your way from beach to bar, as we've rounded up our top tips to ensure you look polished from beach to bar all summer long.
Embrace beach-side braids
Braids are so on-trend at the moment. Celebrity hairstylist, Anthony Nader suggests spraying sea-salt spray all over your hair before you hit the beach, leaving your hair in a braid as you bask in the sun. When you’re ready to hit the bar, choose to either unravel your braid and sweep your hair to the side or opt for a French braid across your hairline to frame your sun-kissed face.
Search for statement one-pieces
Trade in your bikini for a statement one-piece that oozes understated glamour, like this one from Zimmermann. One pieces are perfect for wearing from beach to bar and are great layering pieces to see you through the whole summer.
Try semi-permanent makeup
Prior to your summer holiday, consider investing in ‘semi-permanent’ makeup (it’s far less drastic than it sounds, we promise!). Consider trying one of the latest trends, eyebrow feathering; a brand new (and super natural looking) approach to eyebrow tattooing. Pair your semi-permanent brows with natural eyelash extensions and you’re guaranteed to look primped and preened at all times. No panda eyes in sight.
Opt for maxi skirts and palazzo pants
Convenient to pack in your beach bag? Check. Comfortable? Check. A sure fire way to make you look impossibly chic at the bar post beach? Check! Swap your denim cut-off shorts for a long, flowing maxi skirt or pair of palazzo pants to wear to your favourite bar post ocean-inspired fun. Slip on a pair of palazzo pants on top of your favourite statement one-piece and you’ll look instantly polished.
Unless you’re blessed with perfect porcelain skin, everyone looks a little more radiant with a bit of colour. The finishing touch to your beach to bar outfit is always the perfect tan. But basking in the sun all day can lead to sore, sunburnt, parched skin—instead, lather sunscreen on top a perfect spray tan. Look for tans that have a green pigment to counteract any orange, such as St. Tropez. Alternatively, try a revolutionary Spraytoniqs tan pre hitting the beach—a spray tan that’s available at select salons nationwide that chooses the perfect spray tan formula for you based on your skin shade, skin type and concerns.
Quench thirsty skin and tresses
The sun, sea and sand can take its toll on your skin and hair stripping it of all moisture. Keep your complexion radiant by stashing a facial mist in your beach bag, spritz it on throughout the day and pre-bar to keep your skin hydrated, try Kate Somerville’s Nourish Hydrating Firming Mist with beetroot, algae, ginger and green tea for a youthful, dewy glow or ALPHA-H Moisture Boosting Facial Mist. Keep frizz at bay and your locks protected with a conditioning cream or oil with UV filter, such as SACHAJUAN’s Hair In The Sun.
Go for a flushed no-makeup look
When it comes to beach to bar beauty, understated, undone glamour is key… Looking like you spent three hours achieving the ultimate contour is not. Celebrity make-up artist, Max May suggests the key to achieving flawless summer skin is layering a cream blush underneath a light-weight foundation, such as Dr Jart’s Dis A Pore Beauty Beauty Balm.
“Achieve a fresh summer flush by applying BECCA Beach Tint in Dragonfruit to the apples of the cheeks and then apply a light-weight foundation mixed with a hint of liquid luminiser such as BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector. It's guaranteed to knock-off 5 years and is my favourite trick for a fresh forever-young makeup look”, explains Max.
