Prepare the outrage-meter. The internet has a new “blue dress/gold dress” situation but this time, it’s for sound. Your workplace office banter is about to get real heeeeeeated.
As with all internet-outrage machines, this all started on Twitter. And for reasons unknown, one Twitter user posted this scandalous sound bite.
What do you hear?! Yanny or Laurel pic.twitter.com/jvHhCbMc8I— Cloe Feldman (@CloeCouture) May 15, 2018
Depending on who’s listening, the disembodied voice is saying “Yanny” or “Laurel”. At the time of writing, this clip has clocked at over 2.46 million views, and of course, it’s spawned deep-diving articles where experts dissect the scientific intricacies of audiology, complete with confusing diagrams of sound waves.
We won’t go that far, but we do have many questions, like: Who is this @cloecouture? Where is this soundgrab even from? Who (or what) is a Yanny? Why is an Instagram poll on Twitter (this is some Inception-level cross-social-media platform sh*t)?
We’ll probably never have concrete answers to the above, but we do know one thing—Yanny and Laurel will be zooming up the annual “most popular baby names” lists of 2018 (you heard it here first).
