Could Nasi Lemak Korner be dishing out the best beef rendang in Perth?
One of the newest Malaysian restaurants to hit Perth, Nasi Lemak Korner is already attracting a steady stream of Perth foodies in search of the fresh, tasty and vibrant Malaysian street food flavours being dished out.
Sitting pretty on Preston Street, the restaurant threw its doors open last year and has already become an extremely welcome addition to the Como dining scene.
While Malaysian restaurants aren’t always known for their funky interiors, Nasi Lemak Korner’s focus on creating a beautiful restaurant has really paid off. The restaurant’s layout is simple and urban—think exposed brick walls, dark flooring, industrial hanging lights, pops of greenery and some pretty epic street art from Malaysian artist Joshua Kane Gomes decorating one side of the restaurant. It’s vibrant, modern and super stylish.
There really is something about Malaysian food that makes me weak at the knees—the warming curries, the spicy noodles, the smoky satays—it’s all just so comforting. Rocking up for dinner on a Sunday with hungry bellies, there wasn’t one thing on the menu that didn’t sound delicious.
We started with the traditional nasi lemak with ayam goreng (fried spiced chicken), which came with coconut rice and all the essential trimmings before getting stuck into a tasty mee goreng mamak, a flavoursome fish assam curry and a roti canai (served with dahl and sambal) which was everything you want from a roti—soft and flaky on the inside, and crisp on the outside.
The aforementioned star of the show, however, was the melt-in-your-mouth tender and spicy beef rendang which I have been dreaming about ever since. It’s by far Nasi Lemak Korner’s most popular dish and for good reason.
The crew here also make some signature Malaysian teas and desserts, including a durian strudel, which while too full to try on this visit, is on my list for next time.
We left stuffed, satisfied and with big spicy smiles. You can take my word for the delicious-ness of this restaurant, but proof is in Nasi Lemak Korner's adoring fans who fill this place to the brim night after night.
