Opus | The Verdict

By Tessa Gallagher - 15 Dec 2015

Opus is one of those iconic Perth restaurants that has been around for years but is still a bit of a mystery to those that haven’t been lucky enough to eat there.

It's hidden away among the corporate head offices of West Perth next to the Richardson Hotel (which FYI, is where Beyonce AND J-Lo have stayed, amongst loads of other celebs).

Walking in to Opus on a balmy Wednesday night, we were greeted by super attentive staff and a space that oozed warmth, comfort and old-world glamour. It’s dark, it’s elegant, it’s romantic…it’s the sort of place that makes you want to stand up a little bit straighter as you walk in.

As one of Perth’s best dining experiences, you may be forgiven for thinking you will have to take out a second mortgage to afford to be able to dine here. But while it may have traditionally been a special occasion restaurant only, Opus are currently offering a pretty incred deal where you can get three courses from the a-la-carte menu for a hip pocket friendly price of $69.

So naturally we had to go see what all the fuss was about.

The menu at Opus pays homage to French food as well as WA produce and is simply outstanding. Sitting down and tucking into the delicious bread with salted truffle butter, I knew we were in for an epic night.

We tried the seared scallops and roast pork belly for entrée, both delicious and perfectly cooked.  On to the mains, and the goldband snapper with globe artichokes, young fennel and jerusalem artichoke puree was fresh and delicious while the roast lamb loin (with borlotti beans, broad beans, heirloom tomatoes and chickpea puree) was melt-in-your-mouth tender.

I didn’t think things could get better, but they did, because Opus just happens to dish out some of the best desserts in Perth. Their peanut butter creation with waffle, salted caramel, peanut butter ice-cream, coffee chocolate gel and candied macadamia nuts was hands down the dish of the day, while the milk chocolate, passionfruit and Nutella dessert (with Nutella rice bubbles…yep!) was insanely more-ish. It’s fair to say that both plates were licked clean and I walked out with a full belly and a huge grin on my face.

Opus is as perfect for group dinners as it is for date night and while everything about this restaurant is luxe—from the furnishings to the staff to the 30-page wine menu—it now doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg to enjoy it.
