To binge or not to binge—that is the question.
And it really needs no answering, does it? Because there’s really only one answer, and that is to binge, binge, and then binge some more. And there’s no better place to get your binge on than Netflix. Agreed?
So, for your Netflix viewing pleasure and to help you get through the chilly winter months ahead, here’s seven shows that are currently sucking up all our time.
Shameless (the American version)
Where do we even begin? First we loved Fiona. Then, we hated her. We adore Vee and Kevin, then we wrote them off too. And we can’t forget straight as raw spaghetti Debbie, and Ian who totally went off the rails. Which brings us to Lip, and Carl, who are pretty much a good enough reason to watch this series alone. Shameless, you are one hell of a ride that we can’t get off. Don’t know what we’re on about? Grab your popcorn, get comfy, and click it. Oh baby!
House Of Cards
Complex, compelling, and at times, darn right crazy, House of Cards will suck up your nights or rainy day weekends, and spit you out with an understanding of politics (some will disagree) and a deep love of the magic that is Kevin Spacey. It can take a while to get in to, but persevere and you’ll be rewarded with deeply disturbing storylines and characters, who just when you think you understand them, turn around and surprise you big time.
Holy wow! There’s documentaries, then there’s Netflix documentaries, and if you don’t know the difference, let’s just say the latter is a full-blown cinematic experience. Chef’s Table is a series of incredible profiles on the world’s top chefs, delving into their backstory, their restaurants, and what they’re plating up. If you love your food shows to have more substance than a re-run of MKR, this is right up your watchin’ alley. Our faves in the series? Massimo Bottura, Francis Mallmann, and Gaggan Anand. And all the others, too.
Ricky Gervais fans, if you haven’t seen Derek yet, you are missing out on one of the best documentary-style shows in a long, l-o-n-g time. Sitting in the middle of genres, somewhere between comedy and drama, it will have you laughing out loud and then sitting in a pool of tears. It’s hard to explain to non-watchers what (or who) exactly Derek is, so I’m not even going to try. But it could just be Ricky’s best work yet. It’s that good.
Gah! We want this woman in our lives. Brazenly honest, refreshingly upfront, no bullshit… Chelsea Handler has made it onto our dinner party list (you know, the “if you could invite 10 people over for dinner” list). Talking drugs (which she kindly takes for our viewing pleasure), marriage, and everything in between, she doesn’t tread lightly… around, well, anything. The beauty of this little series is every episode is on an entirely different topic, so if for some weird reason you decide not to binge, then you won’t be any worse off.
Pablo, Pablo, Pablo, we did not know the breadth or depth of your escapades until we got cosy with you on the couch, night after night after night. If you’ve heard of Mr Escobar but don’t really know why he’s famous, then this series will get you up to speed. Be prepared to disappear off the social radar for a couple of weekends straight, ‘cause this show will dig its claws into you. This shit is bananas. Seriously.
It’s pretty awesome that one of our own landed a deal with Netflix, and now, it’s kind of our duty as Australians to pick this award-winning series when shuffling through this mega library of films and TV shows. Beyond the fact that we should get behind this comedy because it’s home-grown, it’s also really, REALLY damn funny. A satire about white-collar working life, it’s witty, topical, and some have said, a pretty spot-on look at the public service.
