Whether you're vegan by principle, vegan by accident - because of allergies and intolerances - or even if you just sometimes feel like a bit of plant-based eatin', it can be hard to find somewhere that's friendly to your needs, that keeps your mates happy, AND that tastes truly amazing. Well my friends, fear not - we've tracked down the most wholesome spots on the Coast, dishing up animal-free eats you'll luuuurve.
If you're a bit over the burgers and bao on Ocean Street, take yo'self across the road to Elixiba. This haven of plant-based goodness and happy vibes is 100% vegan and gluten free, and you can pick up your usual vegan faves like falafel, and chickpea curry, along with a few more unusual dishes like smoky BBQ jackfruit "pulled pork" burger, and coconut flesh "calamari". Once a month they have a "Pay What You Like" night, where you pay exactly what you think the meal is worth.
Live Foods Cafe
If you head to Maleny for just one thing, make it the famous key lime pie at Live Foods Cafe. Grab a seat in the sun share a raw pizza and make sure you save space for a creamy slice of the heavenly key lime pie and a coffee made with your choice of hemp, soy, cashew or rice milk, and feel sorry for all the suckers down at sea level.
Ok so this spot isn't totally vegan, but it was worth a special mention because of the stunning vegan ramen on offer at this little Maroochydore gem. It's made with a mushroom broth and kelp seasoning, and is chock full of rich, umami flavour. The grilled lotus root on the top makes it look kinda magical, and the different mushrooms give an amazing variety of textures. We're in love with Umami Ramen here at TUL.
The Wholefood Kitchen
Combine your vegan dinner with some karma-friendly community spirit. Head down to this Marcoola pop-up on a Friday evening for a communal vegan meal for just $12.50 for adults (only five bucks for kids!) You don't get to choose from the menu - like your mum says, you'll eat what you're given - but we guarantee you'll love the curries, vegies, sides and desserts that Lizette dishes up with love each week. Make sure you bring your own reusable containers for takeaway. If you're looking for one of the best vegans cafes on the Sunshine Coast then The Wholefood Kitchen is where it's at.
The place to go when you want to take your non-vegan mates to lunch, but you don't want to hear them complaining about the "rabbit food". Trust us, they won't even know that the hotdogs, cheezeburgers and tacos aren't the real deal. Delicats is where it's at for some of the best vegan on the Sunshine Coast.
This plant-based superfood bar is your one-stop shop for all things coconutty, raw and epic. Grab a smoothie or a bowl to take to the beach before you hit the waves. You'll love Coconut Head as much as we do.
Fast food isn't just for the omnivores. Choose from a huge range of burgers that will be dripping sauce down your arms (no boring corn and pea veggie patties here). At MooFree Burgers we're talking a new take on old-school burgers, with fat chips, and juices from Charlie's Raw Squeeze next door.
Another V-dawg heaven! (V-dawg is slang for Vegan because Vegan’s are gangsta AF). If you love pulled pork but don’t like pork, you’re in luck! The slow-cooked pulled jackfruit burger is the most delicious pig-free, pulled pork burger we’ve ever tried. The smoky sauce and creamy slaw is a combination that not even RSVP.com could’ve united better than C.N has. Well played Cafe Nurcha, well played.
The Sun Thai Restaurant
You can't go wrong with vegan Thai food - the flavours and textures are all about crunchy, fresh vegies, and everyone knows that tofu always tastes better with chilli paste. Sun Thai curries and stir fries are made with soy "meat" and "seafood", and all dishes are free from garlic, onion and chives - perfect for those with intolerances (or if you're just not keen on garlic breath.)
Sunshine Coast Vegan Markets
While we all love eating out now and then, sometimes you just want to pick up the fixin's and cook your own. Head to Nambour on the first Sunday of each month to get your fill of vegan, ethical and local produce, as well as clothes and products. And if you just happen to fill up on some of options at the amazing food stall while you're there - well, we promise we won't tell. All the details are here.
New Earth Cafe
New Earth Cafe has a cult like following of loyal vegan diners and after one dining experience we can understand why. It's AMAZING! They pride themselves on raw, organic and gluten free noms and best of all some of the dishes come topped with edible flowers! What could be better than that?!
