Alright, let’s voice the question we’re all mentally asking ourselves every time this day chugs around—what even is St Patrick’s Day?
According to Google, it’s a cultural and religious celebration held on the death of Saint Patrick, one of Ireland’s patron saints. No mention of booze, pretending to Irish dance, and then swapping it for tabletop-style because it’s that much easier, either. Strange that.
But because we don’t treat Google as gospel, unless we totally agree with what it’s telling us, we know that St Patrick’s Day is also about wearing lots of green, speaking in a fake Irish accent, and guzzling pints of Guinness.
With such serious antics at play, only the best venue will do. So we’ve put together a list of the best Irish pubs on the Sunshine Coast, so you can be guaranteed to have a merry old time this St Patrick’s Day.
O’Malley’s Irish Pub
Live by the “go big or go home” motto? O’Malley’s is hosting the biggest celebrations for St Patrick’s Day on the Sunshine Coast. There’ll be Irish dancers, bag pipes, Mr and Mrs Lenny the Leprechaun (nope, we have no idea who they are, but they sound cool), and live DJ sets. The craic will be mighty, that’s for sure. Free entry until 9pm, and then you’ll be putting down five big ones to get through the door. Five dollars, people, five dollars.
Where: Corner of Venning Street and The Esplanade, Mooloolaba
Flanagan’s Irish Pub
Shake the sand off your feet with an Irish jig at Flanagan’s this St Patty’s Day. This Noosa restaurant slash sports bar has all your beloved Irish necessities at the ready—Guinness and Kilkenny on tap, Guinness Pie, and Cider Mussels, as well as live music by Celtic band, The Barleyshakes. Wear your best green get-up, hang in the beer garden, and wile away the afternoon. Tight-arses will be looked after with generous specials. Oh yeah!
Where: 19 Noosa Drive, Noosa Heads
Patrick’s Irish Pub
If you’re happy to miss out on a rager of a night on the Coast, for a quiet bevvie with spectacular views over the Glass House Mountains, then Patrick’s Irish Pub is calling you. Tucked just outside of the Maleny township, this super modest, but super friendly watering hole offers some of the best vistas you’ll find anywhere on the Coast. Plus, you’ll find all your fave Irish brews on tap. It’s a no frills spot, so don’t come expecting a “fancy” pub experience.
