5 Ocean Street Bars You Need To Hit

By Fiona Willett - 11 Nov 2015

The Sunshine Coast is no poor relation when it comes to bar-hopping choices and it’s never been easier (and cheaper) to have a night on the town.

Gone are the days of lining up for a taxi at Mooloolaba’s bar haunts for a drunken ride across to Maroochydore’s once-sparse clubbing hot spots. The only problem you’ll have now is narrowing down where to go.

Winos and guzzlers, look no further than the CBD’s food and wine precinct aka Ocean Street, for the best bars in Maroochydore.

The Piano Bar

Everyone knows the wildest nights start the classiest, so if you’re looking to kick off your evening with an aura of sophistication (it’ll go out the window later), head to The Piano Bar. Somewhere between an inner-city jazz bookshop and an alleyway saloon in New Orleans, The Piano Bar is a standout among the best bars in Maroochydore. Decked out with Art Deco lampshades, a fully functioning baby grand piano, and the scent of something Mediterranean, this warm little hub basically beckons the savvy wine drinker to come in off the street and spend. The drinks list is expansive with a large selection of classic whites, reds, a martini station, as well as a set of eight signature cocktails. Go for The Gondola to start your evening off fruity and sweet.

The Post Office

The Post Office hits all the marks for a great night out: relaxed, cosmopolitan, vintage, cool! With great service and a contemporary beer garden to boot, this new addition to the Ocean Street booze fest doesn’t require you to wear a pair of heels or a tuxedo to fit in. Set inside the old Maroochydore post office building, the bar has been designed with a nod towards history, featuring exposed palette timber, worn leather lounges and a tonne of pendant mood lighting. Choose from the extensive menu of craft, draught, tap and bottled beers or get a bartender to mix you up a cocktail–they know their way around a martini glass.

Peak Wine Bar

In the bustling activity of night time Ocean Street, Peak Wine Bar sits pretty like a peace of art you can’t help but be intrigued by. Simple, elegant and inviting, Peak utilises a timber, steel, gold and silver construct to create the right mood if you’re looking for a first date-style location. Choose a street facing bar-style table, a plate of tapas (all food is locally sourced and foraged) and a glass of red then sit back and enjoy the view from one of the best bars in Maroochydore.

Sol Bar

The granddaddy of Ocean Street night life, Sol Bar (or the new Sol Bar as locals call it) is at the centre of all great Maroochydore nights out. Sol Bar is the perfect culmination of music, arts and culture–a place where after office drinks and dreadlocks come together. Sol Bar is a come one, come all for music enthusiasts featuring everyone from the Smith Street band, British India and a swag of local up-and-comers on kick drums and harmonicas. Undoubtedly the Sunshine Coast’s premium hotspot for live tunes and a cold but affordable beer.

Serving up a cocktails created on a custom range of alcohols that are infused with herbs, superfoods and bushtuckers, there’s really no reason for you not to drink this weekend. Sip on an Aztec Negroni (featuring the usual suspects plus house-made cacao bitters and blood orange oil) or a botanic brew. And while you’re at it, order one of their delectable share plates—we can vouch for the coconut calamari!
