You’re not going to stumble on Reception by accident, unless you’re cruising the streets of Coolum Industrial Estate looking for the waterpark or are a lucky sod who works nearby.
But that’s why we’re making it our mission to tell you about this brand spanking new espresso bar, because it’s somewhere you should go to. On purpose. To a drink really good coffee, and play a game of Uno with your mates.
Tucked totally off the main drag, between Coolum Beach and Yandina Creek, Reception Specialty Coffee opened its glass doors last week after a one-month renovation at the hands of owners Ted Russell and Ben Hammond, who also own the adjoining mechanic business—so now our dream of getting a tune and a coffee fix in the one outing is an IRL thing. Bam!
They say good things come in small packages, and it totally rings true for Reception. Not only did the small space push the boys to think creatively about the fit-out, but so too did the modest budget, resulting in a heap of DIY action to get this nook up to scratch.
White walls and floors, soft grey tiles, and light-coloured rubber wood cabinetry give this space a minimalist, Scandi-style vibe, so even though it’s tight it still feels open and airy.
Light and bright with only two indoor benches and a couple of low-slung tables and stools outside, it’s the kind of place where chatting to your coffee-drinking neighbour on the table next to you, or the guy waiting for a takeaway, is the norm.
Serving up Tim Adams coffee—although there’s whispers of bringing up beans from a certain southern coffee roaster (but we’re not going to spill those beans, just yet)—if you like to pair your morning brew with some of the sweeter things in life, these guys also serve more-ish slices from our friends at Hamptons Espresso in Buderim.
For now, Reception is only open weekdays from 7am to 12pm with times soon stretching to 2pm, so if coffee before work is your not-so-guilty pleasure, then make this your next morning pit stop.
