There’s a new breed of slashies popping up among Sunshine Coast cafes, and they’re fast becoming the go-to spot for mixing coffee with laid-back beach vibes. If you haven’t dropped in on a surf and espresso bar yet, it’s time to slide on in to one of the Coast’s best, to see what the rave is about.
From stores stocking second-hand clothes to sleek board shops, these are our fave places to chill out, drink coffee and prep for (or just dream about) a day in the water. They’re also pretty smooth at pumping holiday vibes into the working week, and who can say “no” to that? Not us!
Compound Secondhand Surf & Espresso
We’re loving the whole idea behind Compound. Tucked a street back from Coolum’s main drag, Compound’s four walls provide a gallery like space for a mean espresso bar, vintage surf threads, relic boards and free-flowing casual banter. Nab something from the second-hand racks and you’ll help raise funds for not-for-profit organisations that Compound supports. Pretty sweet deal, when you can drink your coffee and do something good for the community all before 7am.

So there’s cafés that welcome salty, sandy surfers, and then there’s Noosa cafes made for them, and that, our friends, is where Underground Surf comes in. With board racks at the ready, heading to this hidden surf and espresso bar straight after a morning at the points isn’t just condoned, it’s encouraged. One of the only coffee sippin’ haunts that looks down over Hastings Street, if you miss out on a prime spot on the deck, there’s plenty of stunning surf shots to look at inside. These guys also have a massive range of boards and a heap of Patagonia wears on offer!

The Island Surf and Espresso
You’ve just gotten out of the water at Mudjimba, but are dry within seconds. It’s obvious you need to hit refresh but you’ve already swapped the damp boardies for the spare shorts in the boot. Thirst is gripping your throat with its nasty claws and beads of sweat are already decorating your forehead with a not-so-sexy glow. We feel ya! Our thirst-quenching medicine of choice this summer? A house-made cold brew coffee from Mudjimba slashie, The Island Surf and Espresso. Can’t go wrong with an order of Bircher muesli for brekkie either!

Captain Sip Sops
Taking multi-tasking to the next level, Captain Sip Sops is the place to go if a morning filled with coffee, a sleek trim, and a new board from local shaper, Thomas Bexon, is your idea of heaven! Covering all bases in a super chilled-out manner, this store is in the industrial area of Noosa and definitely worth hopping in the car for! It’s not uncommon for these guys to have a waitlist for a cut, so if you’re serious about a gettin’ a new do, better book it in!

Alright, so the boards are a little more skate than surf at Boardstore but we couldn’t really leave them off the list, with such a massive local following and a super rad fit out. These guys are pros at meshing a retail store with an espresso bar and their main shopfront in Maroochydore is the perfect spot to slurp a cup of locally roasted Stoker Coffee whilst adding a new longboard to the collection.

Our fave Cotton Tree café and surf gallery has just undergone a major revamp and is looking better than ever! Stocking their own range of Glass apparel, prints you’ll want to take home, and a mix of retro and new summer sleds, this place matches its carefully curated products with a cool café vibe where smooth coffee and a DIY muesli and salad bar are at the ready.
