The Sunshine Coast’s beer scene just went up a whole other level with the opening of the riverfront James Squire Brewhouse, The Savvy Squire.

The Savvy Squire is what craft beer-drinking dreams are made of. With a waterfront location in the Mooloolaba Wharf Precinct, this new brewhouse is big, beautiful and worth clearing your weekend for a visit.

Sitting on The Wharf Tavern’s old footprint, the new brewhouse took the team a speedy 11 weeks to completely transform a worn old-timer to the ultimate space to down a few cold ones, no matter the occasion. It feels sophisticated yet approachable.

Unfolding into various spaces, you’ll enter The Savvy Squire through a spacious beer garden and into the main casual dining and drinking hub, which then spills out onto a waterfront deck, dotted with picnic tables and oversized sun umbrellas.

There’s also a formal dining area, which is masculine in design with black timber panelling, a suspended keg wall and timber furnishings, and would have any interior-lover lapping up the details. Here, you’ll be waited on and enjoy delectable dishes from the menu, all while soaking in the wraparound river vistas through floor-to-ceiling windows.

At the other end of the building, you’ll find a dimly lit bar area, with large screens and bar tables—the perfect spot to rallying up the mates for the footy finals. There’s also a stunning sitting room which can be cordoned off for private functions, just like that special birthday coming up.

Two spacious bars work all angles, and as the only place on the Sunshine Coast where you can discover the full range of James Squire Beers, along with many small batch brews, we’ve no doubt these taps will be pouring schooners around the clock. Try the tasting paddle to dabble in a variety or, if gin is more up your alley, they’re also offering a Four Pillars flight.

The menu is substantial, starting with smaller plates ideal for grazing on while you work your way through the drinks list. We recommend trying the Moreton Bay Bug sliders, BBQ Mooloolaba prawns and the pumpkin and thyme arancini. From there, go big or go home, with a pizza, burger, melt-in-your-mouth steak or comforting pub fare, like chicken parmy or braised beef short ribs. Really, you can’t go wrong.

Putting giant ticks in all of the boxes, The Savvy Squire needs to be added to your Sunshine Coast hit list, stat.

Open every day from 10am to late, if you’re chasing waterviews, beer, great food and good times, the search stops now.
