Hold up… wasn’t it January like, last week? How are we in October already? This year has absolutely flown by, and with summer just around the corner and only a few months left until Christmas, we are already starting to fantasise about holidays. 

Before we get ahead of ourselves and start talking Christmas holidays and summer cocktails, we should remind you that October also gives us plenty of reasons to celebrate. Halloween, Oktoberfest, and even a Ginger Pride rally are all coming to the Sunshine Coast this month. So get your spooky costumes out, grab a beer stein and call your ginger friend, because it’s going to be a wild month.

Polished Man | All Month

To make sure you tick-off your good Samaritan deed this month, you need to know all about Polished Man. Basically, you’re all going to paint your nails to spark up some pretty damn important conversations aimed at raising awareness around trauma recovery and trauma prevention for kids around the world. You can even kickstart your own fundraising target right here which will include a starter kit bearing a Casa Amuk tee, nail polish (to launch those convos) and up to eight free Grill’d burgers throughout October.

Heart Of Gold International Short Film Festival | Thursday 4 Till Sunday 7 October

The 11th Heart Of Gold film festival is returning to the Sunshine Coast once again, and is promising to deliver great things. The festival includes film making master classes, an opening night gala, and over 30 sessions of short films from a range of genres. All the films screened at the festival will compete for the Best Short Film Award, and will take home a whopping $5000, so you can be sure there’ll be some cracking films on display. If you consider yourself any kind of movie buff, or you just want an excuse to chill out in some air conditioning, then be sure to check this event out.

Netfest | Thursday 4 Till Sunday 7 October 

Whether you’re an avid netball enthusiast or just love hanging out by the beach with good tunes and good food (who doesn’t?), then you’ll want to be a part of Netfest 2018. This 18+ mass participation Netball event is coming to Mooloolaba beach, and will bring with it over 2000 netball competitors who will participate in both regular indoor and beach netball competitions. There will also be DJ’s, food and drinks, official parties and celebrity matches, so get your mates together and get down to the beach for an afternoon of good sport and good times. Better yet, get your squad together and register a team to play off against other social competitors. Who knows, you might just become the 2018 champs.

Light The Night | Friday 5 October 

On Friday evening, Cotton Tree will come alive as hundreds of people light lanterns for those battling blood cancers. Not only is the event beautiful and fun, but it raises much needed funds for The Leukaemia Foundation and other important blood cancer research. Register now to start fundraising and reserve your lantern, or come along on the night to participate by indulging in sweet treats, drinks from local food trucks and coffee vendors, and relaxing to live entertainment provided by local muso Matt Wilson. All proceeds go to blood cancer research, so that extra doughnut you want so badly will be totally justified.

Dinner Under The Stars | Friday 5 October 

Picture this. You are seated outdoors at a beautifully set table under a clear spring night sky full of stars. A nearby fire is crackling as you are served a four course meal made of locally sourced produce. Sound like heaven? Well you can make this dream come true by booking yourself a spot at Amamoor Lodge’s Dinner Under The Stars. Book for yourself or for a table of 8 or 10, bring your favourite bottle of wine and get ready for one of the best meals of your life. The best part? Accommodation is available at the lodge, so there’s no need to select a designated driver. Just eat and drink to your heart’s content, then wander on over to your room.

Nambour Outdoor Movies | Saturday 6 October 

Gather up your picnic blankets and pillows, and get down to Quota park in Nambour for an evening screening of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (BYO Gobstoppers). The event is a fundraiser for Thriving Families Nambour, so entry will only cost you a small donation. There will be a BBQ, snacks and cold drinks for sale, with all the proceeds going to local families and children in need. It’s probably a good idea to bring some chocolate too, because *spoiler alert*, this movie features some seriously delish looking choccies.

Ginger Pride Rally | Saturday 6 October 

Red heads, this is your moment. The Ginger Factory (seems appropriate) is hosting the third annual Ginger Pride Rally and it's set to be a big one. After last year’s turn out of over 1500 gingers, you can expect big things from the 2018 event. There’ll also be an array of ginger themed activities, including a ginger garden (serving Buderim ginger beer), ginger beer pong, ginger pride photo booth, and a ginger jelly eating competition. Register now and get a free T-shirt to wear on the big day!

Queensland Celtic Festival | Saturday 6 October

Got Irish or Scottish heritage? Or not? Either way you won’t want to miss the Celtic Festival at the Eumundi Imperial Hotel. Think music workshops, Celtic entertainment, live performances and Irish bush-dancing. With an all-Irish line-up of bands and artists and more food and drinks than you can poke a fiddle stick at, it’s sure to be a jolly good time. An Evening Of Deeper Conversations | Thursday 11 October 

Tired of talking about the weather, politicians and what you had for lunch? Yeah, so are we. If you’re looking for a little more stimulation when it comes to your conversation, this might be the event for you. This exciting new pop-up event coming to Nambour invites participants to openly discuss the important and pressing questions the world is facing today. The convo will be facilitated by former ABC radio host and journalist Yvette Nielson, who will provide questions and discussion points if things start getting quiet. There’s no age limit and no need to prepare, so just bring your opinions and an open mind.

2018 Sunshine Coast Expo | Friday 12 Till Sunday 14 October 

This is your one stop shop for all things lifestyle, home, adventure, camping, boating and caravanning. With over 190 local and regional companies exhibiting a huge range of products and services, you’re sure to find something to spend your cash on. There’ll also be a massive food court (now we’re talking), daily live entertainment, and heaps of prizes to be won. So, if you’re in the market for some new camping gear, be sure to stop by for a squiz.

Friendlyjordies At The Sol Bar | Wednesday 17 October 

You’ll probably already know him from his viral Facebook and YouTube videos, but if you don’t, you might want to check him out. Satirical comedian, podcast creator and radio host Jordan Shanks is bringing his newest live show, ‘Malcolm Turnbull-A Life’ to the Sol Bar. Think political satire, millennial mocking and Aussie stereotyping that is all too real. The best part? It’s at the Sol Bar, so pizza and beer all round.

Sunshine Coast International Fashion Festival | Friday 19 Till Sunday 21 October 

Hosted at The Sebel in Pelican Waters, the 2018 Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival is set to be the biggest yet, with acclaimed local and international designers bringing their very best to the coast. Catwalk shows include resort wear, swimwear, street-wear and couture, so you’ll be sure to get your dose of fashion inspo. There will also be a Trade Lounge, where members of the public, fashion industry and media can purchase wholesale and brand new fashion products, fresh off the catwalk. Yes please.

Oktoberfest Sunshine Coast | Saturday 20 October 

Launching for the very first time this year, Oktoberfest Sunshine Coast will see the Kawana Sports Precinct transformed into a Bavarian themed festival. Based off the traditional celebrations that occur during Oktoberfest in Munich, this event promises to serve up authentic German food and beverages (hello beer and pretzels), and will boast a massive beer tent, German themed alfresco dining, live entertainment, and children’s rides and activities. The coolest bit? The event is completely cashless, and you can create a digital wallet on their website and top it up before the big day, so nothing will come between you and your beers. Easy peasy.

Conscious Life Festival | Saturday 20 Till Sunday 21 October 

Need to take a little time out to restore your mind, body and soul? If this sounds like your ideal weekend, then look no further than the 2018 Conscious Life Festival, which is returning to Kawana for its eighth year. Think two whole days of free (yes we said free) workshops, meditation sessions, music, fitness, alternative therapies and dancing. There will also be over 100 exhibitor stalls selling the best in all things health, naturopathy, personal growth and eco-friendly living. Sound like your cup of herbal tea? Then be sure to get yourself to this event for a weekend of relaxation and renewal.

The Blackall 100 | Saturday 20 Till Sunday 21 October 

Since the first race in 2014, the Blackall 100 trail ultra-marathon has grown by hundreds of competitors and spectators, and the 2018 race is set to be bigger than ever. For those who don’t know, an ultra-marathon is a modest little race of about 100km (count us out). The track traverses the Great Walk of the Sunshine Coast, and completing it is no easy feat. If you’re feeling motivated, entries are open now for both the 50km and 100km race. Running for a couple of days straight not your thing? You can also sign up as a volunteer and be a part of the action, or just spectate from the start line or one of the many race checkpoints.

Aussieworld’s Halloween FestEvil | Saturday 20 and Saturday 27 October 

The Sunshine Coast’s biggest and most loved Halloween event is back and scarier than ever, taking place over two weekends and boasting tonnes of new spooky attractions. This year’s theme is Apocalypse, so zombies are a sure thing. Explore the park after dark and get lost in the 4 epic apocalypse themed mazes, enjoy the live music and spooky disco at The Shed, get your screams out on the rides and park attractions, and fill up your goodie bag by trick or treating. And don’t worry, there’s a scare free zone for the little ones (or you), so it’ll be great for the whole family.
