When it comes to the Coast’s best well-known coffee haunts, we don’t really see much variation. Sure, there are plenty of hip little nooks around where you can pick up a pretty decent coffee, but sometimes you want something with a little, well, soul.
So when we finally found a place with said soul, we were absolutely thrilled to say the least. It's not only the newest but also the coolest coffee joint in Maroochydore. Let's all say a huge hello to Wax Buildup. And yes, you can expect to find a whole lotta soul, as well as some rock, roll, rhythm, blues, jazz, hip hop, and punk. That’s right, this place is not just about the coffee (although the coffee here is insanely good).
Wax Buildup is no ordinary coffee joint, which you can tell as soon as you walk through the door. Rows and rows of vinyl fill the room—it’s like stepping back in time. The light timber record racks, old school boom boxes, and vintage band posters all make the cafe feel like a little slice of the 70s. Even the light fittings have been made from up-cycled vinyl records, and every spare bit of space is used to store both old and new vinyl, so even the most discerning music lover will find something they love here.
It’s not all about the music, either. Wax Buildup is also churning out expertly crafted coffees that are earning it a loyal following of coffee lovers. Barista, Cara Madden, has worked all over the world and has more than 20 years’ experience of brewing the good stuff, which means she knows her way around a coffee machine.
And because no coffee is complete without a bite of something sweet, Wax Buildup also has an array of delicious treats on offer. Think: gluten free cakes, vegan slices, almond croissants, banana bread, and apple and cinnamon doughnuts. You can grab a pastry and a coffee for just $7.50, and then peruse the rows of vinyl at your leisure while sipping on liquid gold. Saturday morning = sorted.
What makes Wax Buildup so special is the story behind its creation. You see, it’s not just a hipster hangout with superb coffee and a few old records, oh no. It’s the passion project and dream of couple, Mark Grounds and Cara Madden. Mark is a muso and vinyl lover who has worked with many well-known artists, and Cara is a world class barista. Did anyone say dream team?
Bringing their passion and love for music and coffee together has been their deepest desire since 2002, so technically Wax Buildup has been a long time in the making. They sourced their favourite beans, found the perfect venue and kitted it out with rows and rows of vinyl, and are now in the business of giving others the best gift imaginable; good music and great coffee.
So whether you’re a music lover, vinyl collector, coffee addict or doughnut eater, there’s something at Wax Buildup for everyone. Do yourself a favour and head here for your next coffee stop, we promise you won’t be disappointed.
