Listers love long lunches in Sydney. We know it because you go gaga at the mere mention of spending the day before Monday lingering over a moreish plate of sliced charcuterie and endless bottles of wine, and there’s no better place to do this than at The Lodge Bar in Balmain.
Head chef Jon Cowan is constantly working to create something special to excite Inner West foodies, and the menu is ever changing. Sunday lunches at The Lodge Bar revolve around fresh, seasonal produce and can feature anything from grilled rib eye steak with chimmichurri, to heirloom tomato salad with homemade rosemary ricotta.
Never fear, fans of a mid-week outing, it’s not all lazy, wine-filled Sunday lunches here. With its moody lighting, plush leather lounges, this cosy little wine bar on the corner of Darling and Birchgrove Street can suit any occasion; from a casual catch up to family lunches and all the way through to date night by candlelight.
And when the time (read: now) comes for cocktails, The Lodge Bar knows its stuff. We just can’t go past the fig jam sour, with George Dickle whiskey and house-made fig jam. It’s the perfect blend of tart and sweet and we’d happily call it one of Sydney’s best cocktails. As staunch professionals, we have made it our New Years resolution to get through every single cocktail on the list. #Priorities.
If you want to head in for a few drinks and a feast; this rustic haven serves up some of the best food in Sydney, from a deliciously flavoursome sesame tuna with pickled radish and black garlic dressing, to the full slow cooked lamb neck with celeriac, shaved celery and capers. Sweet tooths will rejoice in the decadent chocolate tart with salted caramel and crème fraiche.
Finally, you know that extra stomach you have reserved for the cheese course? You’re going to need it here. There is simply no excuse not to indulge in a selection of creamy fromage from all around the world.
We would tell you more, but we have a dinner booking and… Well, we’re hungry. Just go and check out The Lodge Bar in Balmain; have we ever been wrong?
