What’s New In Sydney

By Emma McNamara
1st Apr 2015

We already know you’re all a bunch of busy social butterflies and this month’s definitely not going to be any different, Listers! We’ve got a massive month of new Sydney restaurants and cafés and a tonne of awesome events to pencil into the diary. We want to keep you cool cats in the loop and at the top of your A-game, so start getting your beauty sleep now ‘cos it’s set to be a busy month!

New openings

Potts Point

Marcelle is one of our fave go to cafés in Potts Point. Sitting al fresco and watching the world go by with an Allpress coffee or an Ovvio organic tea helps us start our day the right way. The exciting news is the launch of Marcelle’s new seasonal menu to welcome in the autumnal months. We’re expecting lots of deliciousness here, like the maple-roasted pumpkin salad with rocket, pomegranate and puffed quinoa, the Reuben toastie and the Ploughman's board. This Sydney cafe is one to keep an eye on!

Next Door by Schibello

Those at the Schibello Caffé have educated and treated Sydneysiders to fantastically made Italian-style espresso coffees and specialty coffee blends since the 90’s. This team has just opened up a Research and Development Roasting Laboratory next door to the original Schibello Caffé headquarters, aptly named Next Door by Schibello. The newly minted facility features a coffee training academy, which will help to craft even more fine baristas as well as an on-site espresso bar and dedicated roasting laboratory. This boutique roaster will allow the iconic Schibello Caffé to perform cupping sessions and to experiment with small batches of new blends.

Koko Black

Chocolate lovers, rejoice! The iconic Melbourne institution and their delectable morsels of chocolatey magic have made journey north to open their first Koko Black salon up here in Sydney! When fellow Aussie Shane Hills set off to discover the art of fine chocolate in Germany and was introduced to talented chocolatier Dries Cnockaert in Belgium, little did anyone know this was going to mark the start of something big. The Koko Black signature is finely sourced, ethically considered chocolate creations, which use the finest ingredients and cacao. Due to the fact that only the freshest creams, butter and fruit puree are used means the chocolates have shorter shelf lives than the ordinary chocolate bar but taste that much better!  With an entire menu of chocolate-centric bites like the Belgian Spoil and Chocolate Hazelnut Clusters as well as the option to pick and choose a selection of handmade chocolates, Koko Black is the kind of shopping in Sydney we like!

Haven Specialty Coffee

Surry Hills

Haven Specialty Coffee offers a spacious, open sanctuary for the coffee curious. It’s all about working with the baristas to create your perfect cup. Not only do you choose whether you’re after a nutty, chocolatey or fruity blend but you can also play with the water ratio, temperature, grind, timing and bean’s origin to find what you consider your perfect brew. This is a pretty cool take on our obsession with specialty coffee and a good cup cannot be better accompanied than with a carefully crafted food menu. Head chef Thomas Taylor fuses Asian cuisine with Australian flavours to create meals like drunken chicken marinated in authentic Chinese spices served with blanched kale, bacon, confit garlic and poached eggs. The pork-belly burger at this new Sydney café is modified and made more daring and delicious with homemade kimchi and cheese.

Pagoto Gelato and Waffle House

If the name wasn’t enough to tantalise your taste buds, you ain’t seen nothing yet! Pagoto boasts over 36 flavours of gelato and ice cream that are truly unique and reflective of the flavours of Greece. That’s right, taste the homemade flavours of the Aegean that Pagoto have captured and turned into gelato like ‘mestixa’ and ‘tsoureki’ (you’ll have to try it to find out what it is!). If gelato ain’t your thang (gasp!) then pop by for a top-notch coffee, Freddoccino or frappe and enjoy a freshly made-in-front-of-your-eyes waffle with fresh ricotta, walnuts, cinnamon and honey or Nutella and banana. If you’re feelin’ a little fancy and a bit sweet, opt in for the smashed pavlova, strawberries and passionfruit sauce waffle or the peanut butter, banana and honey. To sum up this most recent godsend, this is a sugar hit hot-spot heaven on Earth!

Pana Chocolate

Raw, organic, handmade chocolate using raw organic nuts, goji berries, coconut flakes and pure 100% essential oils is basically health food in our books. That’s why we were super excited to hear that Pana Chocolate has opened a store in Sydney. Certified as organic and vegan and with delicious flavours like coconut & goji, sour cherry & vanilla, rose, cinnamon and mint, what’s not to love about Pana Chocolate! This month is set to be a sweet one, minus the guilt factor!

Bake Bar

Hoorah! Bake Bar Organic Artisan Bakery has opened a second location in Sydney’s inner-west. Their current location in Randwick is one of the best bakeries in Sydney  and their new outpost is set to be another winner. We love Bake Bar for their philosophy of providing us with delicious fresh, organic and sustainable produce and are over the moon that we can now pick up our favourite baked goodies in Alexandria! Their grilled haloumi and veggie sandwiches, granola bowls and fresh, perfectly formed pastries sure have cemented their place in our good books!

Banana Blossom

Banana Blossom is a household name for those harking from Sydney’s Northern Beaches and now those in the east can enjoy the fresh flavours in Bondi! With a penchant for combining Asian tastes with a modern, fresh and healthy take, Banana Blossom has created a selection of mouth-watering salads and lunch dishes for those on-the-go that won’t break the bank. Banana Blossom is set to bloom in Bondi!

Naked Foods

Going nude at Naked Foods sounds a wee bit sexy but it’s all about stripping back the unnatural, processed and artificially sweetened aspects of our modern day diet and taking our food back to how nature intended– to what our grandparents would have eaten (sounds a little less sexy now…). Naked Foods has been around for years bulk-selling their supplies of goodness in Sydney’s markets and with the Oxford Street store turning a year old, it was time to expand! Their Newtown location has just opened up shop and is offering up its organic, naked goodness for all to enjoy. Products are distributed from large bulk-sized barrels into containers, jars and paper bags meaning you can buy as little or as much as you like. By selling their products in this format Naked Foods is also helping to reduce the clutter and plastic that’s filling up landfills and destroying our Earth. If it all seems a little daunting, don’t worry there’s an onsite nutritionist to help you decide what you might be after!

Say It With Polish

Send your friends a bespoke nail polish complete with a personalised message as a unique and memorable gift, perfect for any occasion. Say It With Polish is proudly Australian made and owned and is perfect for hens parties, weddings and corporate events. Blending fashion with function, you have complete control over the gifting process where you can choose the colour of the polish, the label, font and size. We love that we can create one of a kind, useable pressies for the people that we treasure.

KIN by us.

Macquarie Park

Much loved My Kitchen Rules contestants, Uel and Shannelle Lim, are now wowing the public with their cooking skills with the launch of their new Sydney cafe, KIN by us. at Macquarie Park. The dishes on offer, including an all day breakfast, are inspired by their shared Indonesian and Singaporean heritage and are a lovely combination of the different flavours Asia has to offer mixed with fresh Australian ingredients. Soft-shelled chilli crab, fried chicken wings and ‘snap crackle pop’ (chicken rice with egg and chicken skin) are bound to be on everyone’s favourite list. With coffee supplied by Rueben Hills and the delightful, mouth-watering concoctions bound to be gracing the menu, we can tell this is going to be one of our regular weekend spots.

Pei Modern's Greek Inspired Family Lunch

One of Sydney’s best new restaurants, Pei Modern, is mixing it up with a Greek inspired family lunch just in time for Orthodox Easter. Head chef Matt Germanchis is getting ready to dazzle us with traditional Greek Easter family favourites, Greek wine and more. Enjoy a meal together with your family over this special time for $75 per person or $100 including wine, which includes traditional pita, spanakopita, stuffed peppers, whole fish, wood-oven lamb and Greek salads. This all sounds pretty darn tasty to us!

2015 Orange F.O.O.D Week

Orange F.O.OD Week is NSW’s premier food festival and for good reason. There is a huge assortment of food and wine events devised to showcase the best of the region’s produce. There are over 80 events in the works including the signature F.O.OD Week Night Market, The 100 Mile Dinner, Sunday Producer’s Brunch and Market and ‘Forage’. The 100 Mile Dinner sees all ingredients sourced from within a 100 mile radius of the town of Molong, whilst Forage has guests walking through picturesque vineyards enjoying tastings of local produce and wineries. With cooking classes, tastings, and dinners all lined up, Orange F.O.OD Week is sure going to be busy and most likely result in a food and wine induced coma (worth it!).

Little Sydney

A day at the races just got that much better and tastier. Royal Randwick is hosting Little Sydney, racing’s newest and hottest gourmet food precinct on Saturday 4th and 11th April. Little Sydney showcases the best of Sydney’s refined racing, food and wine scene and will offer racegoers a gourmet dining experience designed by the celebrity chefs of Icebergs, Chiswick and China Doll. There will be cocktails by Diageo and a DJ spinning beats. The event will be hosted trackside on the gorgeous Rose Garden Lawn, with views of the thoroughbreds prior to their races. Get your tickets early and enjoy a fancy day trackside filled with gorgeous gourmet food and wine.

The Pop Up Cooking School

Sydney’s newest and potentially coolest cooking school is helping Sydneysiders learn to cook tasty, healthy dishes from around the world in an open-air kitchen at the Bondi Farmers’ Market! These classes cater for anyone, so whether you’re a newbie or whizz in the kitchen, you’ll learn a lot and be given expert tips to take home. You’ll cook with organic produce and pastured meats and learn under the guidance of a world-class chef. On the 28th March learn how to cook hot Cajun style with food straight from the ol’ American South, whilst 18th April will have you cooking like a truly romantic Frenchy! Ooh la la!

Limited edition desserts from MakMak Macarons and Devon on Danks

Listen up Listers, this is pretty exciting news we’re about to share. Dream team MakMak Macarons and Devon on Danks have teamed up to create a lovely little list of mango infused dessert experiences that will only be available for the month. Head on over to Devon on Danks for a once -in-a-lifetime opportunity of tasting mango pudding macaron ice cream sandwiches and mango pudding sundaes with mango soft serve, green mango coulis and crushed macarons – oh my! It’s your daily fruit intake but so much better and we’ll be having one of each, thanks (go hard or go home we say)!

Tutti A Tavola dinner at Salt Meats Cheese

It’s no secret that we love Italian food here at The Urban List and when we found out that Salt Meats Cheese is hosting another one of their Tutti a Tavola dinners, we got a little excited. On Friday 17th April, enjoy a four course, Roman style dinner created by Massimo Mele. For $119 per person, you’ll not only receive a decadent dinner, you’ll also a selection of drinks and a cocktail on arrival. Book your ticket quick smart, the last dinner sold out in just two days!
