On the cusp on Bangalow, in the leafy haven of Byron’s hinterland, you’ll find the region’s newest resident: Frida’s Field. And as we’re huge fans of the farm-to-table movement, to say that we’re brimming with excitement would be an understatement.
The new farm-to-table eatery sits on a working property surrounded by rolling hills and is slated to be “a celebration of the abundant Northern Rivers produce and agriculture.”
Housed in an architecturally designed barn, the eatery is a joint project between the Rawlings family and Icebergs Group alumni Daniel Medcalf. The chef was a long time team member of the Sydney hospitality group—as Executive Sous Chef at Icebergs Restaurant—and launched Surry Hills’ The Dolphin as Head Chef in 2017.
More recently he has worked in Bali as Executive Chef for Canggu institution The Slow, so you know that the food at Frida’s is going to be quite the experience.
Opening on Saturday, 26 September, Frida’s Field is going to be a true showcase of locally grown and sustainable produce. Set on a mixed farming property managed by Edward and Jeanie Rawlings and their three children, Frida’s was named in homage to the family pig.
So what can you expect from Frida’s? Since it’s not your typical restaurant, the dining concept will be a little different. The main focus of the venue will be on long lunches served to small groups, twice a month on Saturdays. Think lengthy communal tables with heaped plates of local produce, cooked over an open fire. The menu, like the produce, will change with the seasons, so only the freshest ingredients will be used at all times.
From the Wagyu-Angus beef raised in the surrounding paddocks, to the fruit and vegetables plucked from the kitchen garden and orchards neighbouring the barn, everything at Frida’s will be fresher than a new pair of kicks.
And keeping with Byron’s famous community vibes, Frida’s will also open on Friday evenings with a more casual agenda—think locally farmed meat cooked over coals, alongside buckets of beers and local wines you can enjoy with your mates and neighbours. Plus, the sweeping views of the paddocks and trees are always a welcome sight.
