How’s your weekend shaping up? Well this, folks, is going to make it plenty more interesting!
The fun-loving crew from Not Tonight are teaming up with The Cambus Wallace, bringing a swath of cool to this year’s Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations at Southport’s Chinatown.
If you didn’t have the Chinese New Year on your radar, then we reckon this is one event that might lure you away from your usual Saturday night shindigs. Hijacking the entire laneway running behind Not Tonight will be a pop-up bar and street party operating as a complementary side event to the council-run festivities (which pulls a mammoth crowd in its own right).
Drawing on the nautical theme of The Cambus Wallace and, of course, the animal of the hour—The Monkey’s Fist (also the name of a handy yachtie’s knot) is what we’re predicting will be the hottest event on the Gold Coast this weekend.
Expect the Stone & Wood craft beer to be flowing, plus hip-swaying action to the backdrop of indie rock band Bikini Machine, bongo and percussion beats from Satisvibes, and funky Asian-inspired sets from DJ Brcks. What’s best, the entire stretch of laneway will be spruiked up with festoon lights, oriental lanterns and umbrellas, pallets for those who need to perch, pop-up bars pouring the liquid goods, and street food stalls serving tasty Asian tacos and sliders, and Japanese-style crepes.
The Monkey’s Fist laneway takeover will be best entered via the side of Not Tonight bar, where the light rail conveniently pulls up out front, so leave the car at home. If you are still hungry, join the throngs outside for the main event where you’ll find cultural entertainment and Chinese eats galore. Did someone say sumo wrestling??
And let it be known, it’s unlikely this will be a one-off as the guys already have more laneway hijacking events in their sights. Stay tuned!
With a capacity crowd of 500 people expected, it sounds like our idea of a festive good time with a fun crew, so get in early to enjoy a balmy late summer evening, or risk lining up outside. The party starts at 4pm this Saturday, February 20 (families welcome), so jump over to their Facebook page for all the deets.
Get down there ya monkey!
