8 Of The Best Tips To Nail Beautiful Skin This Summer

Ah summer, you fickle friend. We love you for your many hours of sunshine which gives us an excuse to live at the beach and drink way too many glasses of rosé. We also love you for your fashion—for denim shorts, sandals and bikinis. But we hate you for the havoc you play on our skin.

As if the harsh months of winter weren’t enough, the face-stinging sun and humidity of summer can turn our peachy complexions into sweaty, congested and aggravated messes—never fun in the throes of wedding and party season!

Enter Kim Tran, one of Australia’s well-known skin whisperers. When she talks, we listen and so when she offered to give us her best summer skin tips, we sat up and paid attention.

Here are eight of Kim’s top tips to help you get through summer looking like the gorgeous, glowing goddess you are.

  1. It is SO important to protect your skin from strong harmful UV rays and the drying effect of heat in summer. Avoid heat rash and breakouts on the body by wearing lightweight, breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen to allow sweat to evaporate, and avoid heavy creams or ointments that might block sweat ducts.
  2. Apply a barrier cream before swimming in a chlorine pool. Chlorine is damaging to the skin and over time it will accelerate the effects of free radicals and cause the premature ageing of your skin and hair (eek!) It also leaves the skin more susceptible to UV damage and causes darkening to pigmentation. 
  3. Wear sunscreen every night for two weeks before a beach holiday to allow the sunscreen to build up in your stratum corneum (the skin barrier, which acts as our first line of defence against the external environment). This will make your skin less likely to burn.
  4. It is so essential to reapply your sun protection throughout the day. For those wearing makeup, the best way to do this is by using a sunscreen powder, such as ColoreScience Sunforgettable Powder SPF 50+, to avoid rubbing off your foundation. The sun factor kicks in immediately so you don't have to wait for the sun protection to start working in 20 minutes like traditional suncream.  
  5. If you plan to head to the beach or spend extensive time in the sun, avoid exfoliating your skin for at least three days prior. This allows some build up of dead skin cells on the surface which act as an extra shield against sun damage and can easily be exfoliated off afterwards.
  6. Wear big sunnies to protect the delicate eye areas and avoid squinting which leads to crows feet.
  7. Mist your skin with a hydrating cool spray such as ColoreScience Sunforgettable Setting Mist to hydrate your skin and pull heat from the skin. This is especially good for those suffering from rosacea, as heat is this skin condition's worst enemy.
  8. Increase exfoliation to help prevent sweat and oil from building up within the pores which could lead to pimples. Choose a liquid exfoliant such as Societe Superfruit Enzyme which also works within the pores instead of a scrub which only works on the surface.
