How To Make The Best Espresso Martini EVER!

By Iro Kotsimbos - 19 Sep 2014

Hey Urban Listers, can we get a hell yeah for the weekend?!

Now according to the Official Weekend Rules*, a round (or two…) of espresso martinis are MANDATORY on a Friday night…I mean, surely there's no better way to get the party started, amirite?

The fine folk at Griffiths Bros tend to agree – in their opinion an espresso martini, or any sort of coffee cocktail, is just what the doctor ordered when treating a case of It's Friday Night and I'm Ready to Partaaaayyy Fever. Hmmm, a shared love of coffee cocktails…no wonder we get along…

As Australia's oldest coffee roasting company, Griffiths Bros know a thing or two about coffee – from sourcing the highest quality coffee beans and roasting them on site in Mulgrave, to creating and packing their signature blends, Griffiths Bros are the go-to coffee roasters in Melbourne.

Not only do Griffiths Bros know to create the perfect cup of joe, they also know their way around an awesome espresso martini recipe or two. You may think that any old instant coffee or coffee syrup will work when making coffee cocktails, but you be cray. If you really want to sip one of the best espresso martinis or caffeinated cocktails in town, then you should be using freshly brewed coffee!

Keen to steal their insider secrets, we sat down with the Griffiths Bros team (there may, or may not have been cocktails involved**) and got them to spill the beans on the best espresso martini recipe EVER! They also shared a few of their other fave coffee cocktail recipes and their tips on which coffee suits each drink best.

So Urban Listers, get ready to party all night long…these coffee cocktail and espresso martini recipes will have you well and truly buzzing

30ml Kahlua

30ml vodka

30ml espresso

Coffee beans to garnish

Easy to make and even easier to drink, the espresso martini will certainly get the party started! Simply pour the three ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice, shake well, and then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Top with a few coffee beans and serve!

Griffiths Bros Top Tip: Freshly brewed espresso is vital when making an espresso martini – it won't taste as good without it! Try the Just Fair Coffee range, a Fairtrade and organic coffee, for an espresso martini that'll have you feeling as good as the cocktail tastes!

Double shot of espresso

1 tsp absinthe

30ml gin

If you want to take your coffee cocktails up a notch, then the Bronx Bomber is for you – but be warned, this packs a punch! Shake your ingredients together in a cocktail shaker filled with ice and pour into a short glass. Sip at your leisure and enjoy!

Griffiths Bros Top Tip: The Single Origin El Salvador is a brilliant coffee to use when making the Bronx Bomber. Medium roasted and with a palate finish of cocoa and dark sugar, Single Origin El Salvador also has light notes of tobacco and orange citrus, which complement the other cocktail ingredients perfectly.

60ml Baileys or Irish whiskey

120ml coffee, chilled

Whipped cream to garnish

Who says Irish coffee is best drunk hot? Errr, not us – we think it makes for the perfect cocktail! To make the Iced Irish Coffee, simple mix your choice of Baileys or Irish whiskey with chilled coffee before pouring into a highball glass filled with ice. Top with whipped cream – cheers!

Griffiths Bros Top Tip: The Iced Irish Coffee calls for a full-bodied blend and the Duchess Blend fits the bill perfectly. A semi-dark roast with a slightly stronger taste, the Duchess Blend has hints of chocolate and a nutty sweetness, with a sweet caramel-like finish. Droooool.

1 cup coffee

30ml spiced rum

30ml butterscotch schnapps

1 tsp sugar

Whipped cream and coffee beans to garnish

With its sweet schnapps and spiced rum goodness, the Paradise Found cocktail is seriously addictive! Simply pour the ingredients into a tall glass, stir well, and fill with ice. Garnish with whipped cream and a few coffee beans. Seriously though, one sip and you'll know why it's called Paradise Found!

Griffiths Bros Top Tip: The smooth taste of Paradise Found begs for an equally smooth coffee – this is where the Kingston Blend comes in! A strong-bodied coffee made from 100% Arabica beans, the Kingston Blend has no bitterness and lingering berry and dark chocolate undertones.

60ml vermouth

30ml amaro

30ml strong coffee

30ml simple syrup (a melted sugar cube will also work)

Soda water and an orange wheel

If you're looking for a refreshing cocktail that's both TGIF and Sunday Session worthy, then you'll love the Siciliano. All you need to do is shake the vermouth, amaro, coffee and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker and then pour into a tumbler. Add a few ice cubes and then fill with soda water before garnishing with the orange wheel.

Griffiths Bros Top Tip: Strong coffee and the Siciliano go hand-in-hand and there's really no better blend to use than Noir. With its mix of earthy and nutty flavours, Noir is a dark roasted, full-bodied blend that has a brilliantly smooth finish. Just like the Sicilians, hey?
