If you’ve invited friends round for dinner and end up having to order takeaway because you’ve run out of time/motivation to cook anything, hold the phone. You don’t have to resort to stodgy pizza or fluorescent Chinese food with a range of Melbourne’s best restaurants offering up some superb takeaway options.
Here are our top picks for the best takeaway in Melbourne.
Hellenic Republic is one of Melbourne’s best restaurants, which also boasts an excellent takeaway offering. The Feed the Family pack has to be seen to be believed. For under fifty bucks, you will easily fill four empty stomachs with slow-cooked lamb shoulder, spit-roasted chicken, roast potatoes, grain salad, pita bread and tzatziki. As well as more loukoumades than you could poke a stick at. It’s almost too good to be true! The full à la carte menu is also available to take away, so you really can’t go wrong.
Belle’s Hot Chicken
Forget KFC. Our favourite Nashville-style fried chicken from Belle’s Hot Chicken is available to take home, for all those times when Netflix in bed is just too tempting. Select your meat (wings, tenders, drumsticks etc.) and then choose the heat. Finally, pick out your sauce (good luck going past the blue cheese!) and any sides that take your fancy (pickles, please). Tuck your bucket of chicken under your arm and mosey on home for an epic night in.
When you’ve got a hankering for Mexican, Fonda will sort you out with their full menu available to “taco-way” (sorry) from all four of their locations across Melbourne. The market-fresh rockling burrito is a favourite here at The Urban List, but if you’re in the mood for something light, order one of their ensaladas (we love the deconstructed Mex-Bim-Bap). Olé!
Moroccan Soup Bar
Moroccan Soup Bar is consistently packed, with the queue for tables winding down St Georges Road, so if you want your Moroccan hit fast and waiting for a seat isn’t an option, you’ll be pleased to learn that takeaway is available. Just give them a call, tell them how many people will be eating, and trust them to take care of the rest. Don’t forget to bring your tupperware containers along with you when you pick it up because they don’t do packaging.
No list of the best takeaway in Melbourne would be complete without a pizza mention, and Ladro is one of our favourites. Pick-up pizzas are available from both locations, with a range of extras like pasta, sides and dessert also on the menu. Everything you need for an Italian feast at home!
If the hungry hordes packed into this little Richmond restaurant are too much to handle, you’ll be pleased to know that you can order your Kong favourites and eat them alone on your couch. These guys also offer takeaway boxes, which come in a variety of sizes. We loved the Family Box, which is bursting with ribs, wings, fried rice, BBQ corn, slaw and kimchi. Dinner = done.
We love Huxtaburger because their off-the-chain burgers are not only available for takeaway, they also offer online ordering! The widget is super-smart and will not judge you for being picky. (“I’ll have the Theo burger, minus tomato, with pineapple, add extra Sriracha mayo, on gluten-free bread.”) Throw in one of their legendary milkshakes and you’ve got a match made in heaven, and one of the best takeaways in Melbourne.
When wood-fired pizzas meet home-style Middle Eastern food, you’ve arrived at Mankoushe. Their takeaway menu is to-die-for and super cheap—you can nab the Palestini curried lamb and almond tahini pizza for under ten bucks. Mankoushe even offers bike deliveries, but only to a very small area of lucky locals. This Melbourne takeaway is worth moving house for.
