If you grew up in Australia, you’ll know the Christmas TV specials were always bittersweet. Sweet, because it was Christmas and that was awesome. Bitter, because although Fred Flinstone and The Muppets got to enjoy a proper white Christmas, you were stuck living about five miles from the surface of the sun. Somehow board shorts and king prawns just weren’t the same...
Good thing Barkly Square is here to answer our white Christmas prayers.
This year they’re throwing a special Christmas In July festival, including carols, mulled wined, nutella doughnuts, a gingerbread man workshop, and—wait for it—falling snow! Or at least falling chemicals that resemble snow. It’s about as legit as you’re gonna get in the southern hemisphere, and hey, if Melbourne’s crap weather has one upside, this is it.
The celebrations kick off at 12pm, and there’s a free mug of mulled wine if you drop over $20 at any of Barkly’s specialty stores (sadly Coles and Woolies don’t count as specialty stores). God bless us, every one.
Where: Barkly Square 90-106 Sydney Rd Brunswick
When: Saturday 29 July, 12pm onwards

The good news keeps coming: Melbourne is also getting a unicorn festival (yep, really).
