Some things just go together, like PB and jelly, and Posh and Becks, so this year we’ve teamed up with MINI to bring you, our discerning readers and drivers, our fortnightly MINI Fave 5 series: The must-try guide to Melbourne, celebrating the launch of the new MINI 5-door hatch

Who’s on our list of Melbourne’s best loaded fries, and why did they make the cut?

It’s no secret that we love hot chips. Load them up with some incredible toppings and, nine times out of ten, you’ve got a culinary masterpiece that we would trek across town for. We’ve been indulging to the max on Melbourne’s best loaded fries during these last few cold weeks, and before the winter chill passes and salad weather kicks in, we plan on cramming in a few more dates with our favourite dish. So, where can you get the best loaded fries in Melbourne? Read on for our five favourites.

Poutine with Sriracha at Belleville

Melbourne CBD

One of the best newcomers to the Melbourne CBD bar-restaurant scene, it’s no surprise that Belleville made our list of the best loaded fries in Melbourne. The kitchen here brings together cheese, chicken gravy, shoestring fries and a flavour-popping dose of Sriracha sauce in its house poutine. The fries are perfectly crispy and the house-made chicken gravy is next-level delicious. As well as serving epic loaded fries, this Melbourne restaurant serves up some of the best rotisserie chicken in Australia and the ever-changing fusion menu includes lobster mac-n-cheese bombs, san choy bao and yakitori meatballs. Hello, dinner.

Thirsty? Pair these fries with…

One of Belleville's lip-smacking house-made sodas. We loved the raspberry seltzer.

Shang-Fry Loaded Fries at YOMG

Glen Waverly

YOMG’s selection of burgers, fries, shakes and the rest is second to none, making them one of our top picks for loaded fries Melbourne. The Shang-Fry puts an Asian spin on everyone’s favourite carb-laden dish. Pairing juicy pulled pork with basil mayo, chilli, spring onions, crispy shallots and toasted sesame seeds, this is one fusion fry-fest that you simply MUST try. Ask them to add an extra handful of shallots for the full effect.

Thirsty? Pair these fries with…

A refreshing fruit super-blend. While YOMG do some amazing milkshakes, it’s their kale, banana, pineapple and coconut water ice shake that we’ve fallen for. The perfect way to offset all that pulled pork.

Chilli Cheese Sweet Potato Fries at BOY & Co

Malvern diner BOY & Co consistently turns out delicious sweet potato fries, which are made all the better when topped with freshly made chilli, grated cheese, jalapenos and chopped spring onions. While the BOY & Co team don’t list this mouth-watering combo on the menu, just ask for the sweet potato upgrade when you order and we can guarantee you’ll be in loaded heaven.

Thirsty? Pair these fries with…

A mouth-watering milkshake. BOY & Co’s milkshake menu includes some amazing flavour combos—the peanut butter and chocolate is amazing, and the Britney Spearmint with choc-mint and Oreo cookies is a modern classic—but our recommendation is the Salty Pimp salted caramel and coconut shake. Delish.

Loaded Fries at 8Bit

The loaded fries at Footscray burger mecca 8Bit mean serious business. Served only in a large portion size, these hearty house fries come topped with chilli beef, American-style cheese sauce, bacon, pickle relish, grilled onions and, if you like heat, jalapenos. The best bit? If you’re an all-out carb lover, you can order this dish with potato gems instead of fries…but then we couldn’t have included them on this list of the best loaded fries in Melbourne. 8Bit, we salute you.

Thirsty? Pair these fries with…

A chocolate bar milkshake. No, we’re not joking. The dudes at 8Bit will make your dreams come true by blending your favourite chocolate bar into a thickshake. If you’re undecided, go for the Kit-Kat shake for biscuity deliciousness.

Chilli Cheese Fries at Le Bon Ton

Texan-style BBQ beef, beans, crispy fries and a slathering of sharp cheddar. If you’re looking for the most luxurious loaded fries in Melbourne, Le Bon Ton has them nailed. Renowned for their drool-worthy BBQ meats, this Collingwood eatery serves up a vegetarian of this meat-heavy dish too, which is just as tasty. Served until late, keep this one on your list for an end-of-the-night loaded fries fix.

Thirsty? Pair these fries with…

A Watermelon Highball. Cut through the carbs with fresh pressed watermelon juice, packed with citrus and mint.
