Preparing for a Halloween party doesn’t have to be scary. Whether you’re looking for a full outfit (hello, Rubik’s Cube) or that perfect accessory to complete your look, we’ve done the hard work for you with this list of Melbourne’s best costume shops, ensuring you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for right in time for the big day.

Miss Kitty’s

A Melbourne costume shop favourite, Miss Kitty’s will never fail to deliver when it comes to creative costumes (think Shaun the Sheep, Spongebob Squarepants, or Slimer from Ghostbusters). A selection of these whacky outfits are also available for sale, just in case you decide to make The Little Mermaid your signature look.

Rose Chong Costumiers

Beloved by Gertrude Street regulars for its incredible leopard-print-and-pink-sequined shop front, Rose Chong is a Melbourne costume shop packed with unique costumes and fancy dress options, even offering outfit advice and wig styling. This year, Rose Chong will be hosting a Spook-tacular Day Out on October 31, complete with free Halloween make-up sessions (bookings are essential) as well as last-minute costume assistance.

Centre Stage Costumes

If you really want to get spooky this Halloween, sort yourself out with some crazy contact lenses. Centre Stage has an excellent (and creepy) range, perfect for ice queens, wild animals and, of course, Marilyn Manson. And for the disorganised among us, this Brunswick costume shop will be open until midnight on Halloween Eve (i.e. Friday, October 30). Rejoice!

Bam Bam Vintage

Bam Bam is more than just your average Melbourne costume shop, also stocking everything from furniture to vinyls, all from decades past. Specialising in authentic hand-made costumes from the roaring twenties, right up to the not-so-nice nineties, the fancy dress selection here also includes themed costumes, crazy characters and even spring racing headwear if you don’t feel like forking out hundreds for a fascinator you’re probably going to lose at Flemington.

Costume Factory

Various locations

Costume Factory has basically taken over Melbourne with a whopping five shops across the city (Kensington, Nunawading, Croydon, Dandenong and the CBD), making it a great last-minute option for those of us who don’t have time to drive across town. But if none of these locations is convenient enough for you, Costume Factory offers a 10% discount for its online customers, so feel free to organise your Halloween look from the couch.

Masquerade Costumes

If you’re a bit too creative for your own good and can’t find what you’re looking for at any other Melbourne costume shop, Masquerade Costumes takes custom orders and hires them to you for the same price as existing costumes. Win! These guys have been in business since 1971 and their collection spans more than 20,000 outfits, making Masquerade Costumes a great option for something out of the ordinary.

Creative Costumes

Another big fancy dress house, Creative Costumes is one of the best costume shops in Melbourne, stocking over 10,000 options, meaning you could be anything from a beer bottle, to a Crayola crayon, to a lab technician from Breaking Bad (yes, really). As well as crazy costumes, you’ll also find a fabulous range of accessories if you’re looking for that perfect finishing touch.

Heidelberg Fancy Dress

Whether you’re looking for a complete costume, or that final piece of the puzzle, Heidelberg Fancy Dress has you covered. Wigs, masks, false eyelashes and latex scars compete for space with Minion outfits and Dorothy the Dinosaur suits. And if you’ve got a partner in crime, this joint boasts a top-notch range of ‘couples’ sets (Homer and Marge, Beauty and the Beast, Ernie and Bert, B1 and B2...).
