We’re total suckers for soft shell crab here at The Urban List. I can’t figure out exactly what it is about the delicacy (The crunch? The sweetness? The fact that most of the time they’re served fried?), but as soon as I see those three magic words on a menu, pulled pork can take a hike and even lamb ribs get the cold shoulder.
So without further ado, here’s the Melbourne guide to everything soft shell crab. Coat those critters in breadcrumbs, slather them with spicy mayo, and let us cram them into our mouths, pronto!
Soft Shell Crab Sliders With Sriracha Mayo & Asian Slaw At Ebenezer
Sliders are the bees’ knees when it comes to bite-sized nibbles, and we haven’t tracked down a better crab and brioche creation than the delights that they serve up in Bayside eatery, Ebenezer Coffee & Wine Bar. Accompanied by juuuust enough heat, thanks to a house-made Sriracha mayonnaise, these are a cracking accompaniment to a glass of local wine, or an afternoon aperitivo. (Hint: half-price happy hour, hell yes!)
Egg & Soft Shell Crab Croissant At White Mojo
What the actual duck, White Mojo. A newcomer to the soft shell crab scene, this is basically all of our favourite foods in one buttery pastry-wrapped mouthful. I don’t know which weirdo came up with the fried egg and soft shell crab croissant, but bravo, you food porn pioneer.
Soft Shell Crab Tacos At Mi Corazon
Pretty much everything tastes fab when it’s crammed into a soft taco, but nothing beats the soft shell crab tacos at East Brunswick hidden gem, Mi Corazon. Served with a side of guacamole, they’re best on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday night when you can get two plus a Tecate tinnie for a mere $15. Get in my mouth already.
Soft Shell Crab Burger With Sesame Slaw & Spring Onion At Hammer And Tong
Had anyone else forgotten about this classic Fitzroy brunch spot? If your answer is ‘yes’, then this juicy soft shell crab creation is the perfect excuse for a revisit. Also, did anyone out there have this with the candied bacon at Sugar Mountain, served from the Hammer and Tong food truck? GIVE ME THAT FOOD DREAM BACK, YOU CRAB-COOKING HARLOTS.
Crispy Soft Shell Crab & Tiger Prawn Curry At Son In Law
Thai flavours are always a winner in our books, and Collingwood restaurant Son In Law has knocked it out of the park with their crab and tiger prawn green curry. Perfectly seasoned with Thai basil, kaffir lime leaves and coconut milk, this is one for all-round seafood lovers.
Soft Shell Mud Crab, Fennel & Dill Salad & Lime Mayo In A Brioche Bun At Top Paddock
Taking the award for the most posh soft shell crab burger on the list, Top Paddock’s legendary mud crab dish is a Melbourne classic. If you haven’t tried it, we should probably kick you out of the city’s limits.
Soft Shell Crab Souva At Gazi
Covered in mint, coriander, honey and mayo, this Gazi creation is the most decadent souva around. The crab provides juuust the right amount of crunch to balance out the softness of the Greek bread—and the honey?! GENIUS. Team Gazi, we salute you.
Soft Shell Crab Burger At Mr Mister
An oldie but a goodie, Windsor café Mr Mister’s soft shell crab burger, complete with mini pickles and fennel slaw, is a failsafe when it comes to a seafood bite. They do a mean matcha latte too. Did someone say perfect lunchtime combo?
Curried Soft Shell Crab With Egg, Red Peppers & Snow Peas At Colonel Tan’s
Yes, it might technically be in Revolver, but Colonel Tan’s curried soft shell crab is a mouth-watering hot dish that will have you coming back for seconds. Pair it with some roti bread and a cheeky cocktail for the ultimate crab curry feast.
Soft Shell Crab Bun With Salted Duck Egg Relish At Kong
It’s Korean, it’s delicious, you’ll want at least three of them, and you’d trade your first-born for the last. Enough said.
