Do you love music? Summer? And animals? Well, do we have some great news for you. This summer, our mates at Zoos Victoria have nailed the happy trifecta with a super-charged music lineup—and it’s all for a feel-good cause.
From January 25 to March 9, a string of headline heavyweights will light up Melbourne Zoo’s atmospheric amphitheatre for Zoo Twilights; a not-for-profit live music series with all proceeds going towards helping Zoos Victoria save the tiny (and totally adorable) Eastern Barred Bandicoot from extinction.
And when we say super-charged lineup, we mean super-charged. From The Internet to Vera Blue, Client Liaison to Sampa The Great, it’s a solid bill with an abundance of awesome acts. But tickets are selling fast, and some gigs are sold out already. Dance duo The Presets were a late—but very welcomed—addition to the bill with tickets going on sale from 8am Thursday, January 10. Our advice? Be like the Eastern Barred Bandicoot and hop to it.
Equally diverse as it is splendid, Zoo Twilights' assortment of acts is impressive to say the least. Client Liaison—everyone’s favourite ‘80s-loving, electric duo—will kick the summer off with their sold-out sensory performance; paving the way for several killer gigs to follow in February. We’re talking The Presets, Sampa The Great, Daryl Braithwaite, Vera Blue, Cat Power, The Cat Empire, Aloe Blacc and Rufus Wainwright.
Seeing out the warmer weather in early Autumn, and capping off the Zoo Twilights series, is Hanson—we repeat—Hanson, The Internet and Kiwi sensation, Marlon Williams. And hey, with a lyrical league like that, why only pick one? We’ll be checking out neo-soul standout Sampa The Great and Californian collective The Internet for sure.
The lush lawn is divided into two sections: a dance-til-you-drop area and a kick-back-and-chill zone (we know who we are), so whether you’re keen to kick up your heels or bliss out at the back on a picnic rug, there’s a spot for everyone. Oh, and did we mention tickets include access to the Zoo when it’s closed? It’s kind of like VIP access after the crowds are gone so you can get up close and personal with the animals. Be sure to check out Keeper Talks with the elephants and the giraffes.
The ever-so-cute Eastern Barred Bandicoot is already classified as extinct in the wild—but Zoos Victoria has an ambitious aim to knock it off the extinction list. All the proceeds from the Zoo Twilights series support the protection of the Eastern Barred Bandicoot and saving it from extinction. In cooperation with other eco warriors, Zoos Victoria is on the cusp of introducing this small and shy species back into the wild, so your ticket will help save this adorable marsupial and secure a safe future for the species (not all heroes wear capes).
