To help you find everything worth eating, seeing and doing in Melbourne, we’ve put together your ultimate September hit-list. Looking for an uptown date spot or an underground food pop-up? You’ve come to the right place. Read on and get trend-hunting…
#1: Epic Charcuterie At Movida
Charcuterie is the platter to be nibbling on over an ice-cold beer right now, and we are absolutely loving CBD restaurant MoVida’s delicious embutido and jamon plates, served with peppers and fresh tomato-infused breads. Our go-to for a date-night light bite or a sophisticated after-work drink with friends.
#2: The Countdown Begins For The Melbourne Festival
This year’s Melbourne Festival line-up has been announced and, boy, is it looking good. While the festival itself pops up in October, you will want to book your tickets for shows including folk songstress Laura Marling, an award-winning theatre production of George Orwell’s 1984, and dance productions from around the world.
#3: The Gradi Empire Is Expanding!
Johnny Di Francesco’s Italian empire has been rocking our socks for a while now, but the latest news on the wire is that he’s set to open both a 400 Gradi pizzeria and gelateria in Essendon (whoever said the ‘burbs weren’t cool?!) and a brand new traditional Italian gelataria—Zero Gradi—a few doors down from his 400 Gradi Lygon Street establishment. World-class pizza, a freshly poured beer AND mouth-watering gelato? Sounds like heaven to us!
#4: Nutella Doughnut Milkshakes
Fat feed fans, rejoice! After hitting the big-time in Sydney and Brisbane, Melbourne has finally got its very own Nutella doughnut milkshake, and it’s all thanks to Hawthorn venue Muharam Café. Cleverly called the Nut-Telling Milkshake (pun-derful stuff, team Muharam!), the straw of the shake goes through the doughnut for maximum indulgence. Go on, we dare you.
#5: The Italian Film Festival Hits Melbourne
It’s a fact, Listers: The people, the scenery, the food…Everything is more beautiful in Italy. If you’re craving some European culture, our #1 pick for September is the Italian Film Festival, which kicks off on Wednesday 16th. While there are some hotly tipped new releases that we can’t wait to catch on the silver screen, the film festival is also showing old classics, including the Oscar nominated Il Conformista. Book your tickets, pick up a Peroni, and kick back to watch how the masters of Italian cool do it.
#6: THE Hot Chocolate To Be Drinking Right Now
Hash Speciality Coffee Roasters in Melbourne CBD is the only name on any self-respecting Melburnian’s lips this month when it comes to hot chocolate. The incredible drink comes with a cup of fairy floss, which melts as you pour rich, freshly made hot chocolate onto it. The ultimate warm drink to see out winter.
#7: Gruyere & Pulled Pork Doughnuts
Take a trip to Fitzroy restaurant Hell Of The North and sink your teeth into one of the most decadent items around this month. Their gruyere and pulled pork doughnut is a meaty delicacy that combines everything good in Melbourne’s food scene right now. The perfect late-night snack for hungry north-siders.
#8: Bowie Fever Hits An All-Time High At ACMI
The retrospective celebrating everything Bowie at Fed Square gallery ACMI continues to top the charts, with this month’s late nights line-up looking better than ever. Every Thursday from 6pm, Melbourne’s top DJs and musicians take to the stage for an evening of Thin White Duke-inspired tunes for Bowie Late Nights. Our tip-off? Lock in 24th September for the Congo Tardis tropical sound system and dance your cares away.
#9: Industry Beans’ Incredible Vegan Terrine
Fitzroy café Industry Beans is one of the most beautiful café spaces in Melbourne, and its new dishes certainly reflect that. Having already won an award as the world’s best designed café, the kitchen’s newly launched vegan beetroot terrine, served with cashew butter, basil jelly and edible flowers, is a definite must-eat.
#10: Gelati gets creative at Helados Jauja
Vying for the crown of Lygon Street’s most creative gelataria, Helados Jauja makes incredible ice creams from a whole host of ingredients. The flavours range from the deliciously decadent—think toasted black sesame, blood orange and dulce de leche—to the down-right crazy, including olive oil praline and goats chees raspberry gelato. One to surprise your foodie friends with.
