Beer was a big theme this past long weekend, and while we were all downing coldie after coldie, our friends at local breweries Feral, Gage Roads, Colonial, Little Creatures, Beerfarm and Nail, were busy celebrating their winning spots in the GABS Hottest 100 Craft Beers of the Year.
The infamous national beer contest, saw over 35,500 people voting for more than 2500 beers from 300 breweries—and six West Australian breweries made the cut with a whopping 10 winning beers among them.
Swan Valley brewhouse, Feral, came closest to winning the top spot, placing 7th for their thirst-quenching IPA, Biggie Juice. They also scraped another two beers into the top 100 with Imperial Biggie, a punched up version of the Biggie Juice, making its debut at #49, and the much loved Hop Hog coming in at #51.
Straight out of Perth, Gage Roads scored 15th place with their easy-drinking Single Fin, a summer ale which is, according to them, "more refreshing than a face full of Freo Doctor". We couldn't agree more.
Out of Margaret River, one of our favourite WA breweries, Colonial, produced three top 100 beers, with their pale ale sitting in 29th place, the South West Sour sitting at 38 and their IPA swooping into 64th position.
Craft beer legends, Little Creatures scored a place on the list thanks to their pale ale which made it in at number 54.
New to the GABS list was Margaret River brewery Beerfarm, whose Asam Boi Gose, a salted plum cider, made beer-drinkers very happy over the past 12 months, nabbing #85.
Rounding out the list, it was Nail Brewing with their tropical VPA which nabbed the 88th spot.
If you’re getting thirsty just reading about all this beer, you might want to pay a visit to one or two of Perth's best boutique bottle shops.
