5 Spots To Guzzle A Craft Beer (or Six)

By Claire Plush - 29 Dec 2015

It’s official, the time of the craft beer is now! Look to any bar, uber cool restaurant or pub worth its weight in brew, and you’ll see a carefully curated list of the cold stuff, waiting to be poured into a schooner (or pot, but really, c’mon) after a day spent in the sun or tied to a desk.

We may have been a little slow on the uptake, but you’d never guess it from the vibrant craft beer scene that exists today.

Want to know where to find a local watering hole that knows its brews? Here’s our pick of the best craft beer bars on the Sunshine Coast, ready and waiting to quench your thirst.

The Piano Bar

Knockin’ back craft beer is made all the better at The Piano Bar with a backdrop of live music, seven days a week. Pair a locally made brew handpicked from around Australia—order a 150 Lashes, Checz Mate or White Rabbit and you can’t go wrong—with some Mediterranean tapas for the ultimate weekday escape. No draughts are sub-par ‘round here, so you’re safe to experiment.

Where: 22-24 Ocean Street, Maroochydore

Taps Mooloolaba

If a rotating beer list of up to eight craft beers isn’t enough to coax you through the doors at Taps, firstly—you’re weird—and secondly, perhaps the novelty of pulling your own beer will. Turning your love of a craft beer into a DIY event, Taps has a self-service system in place where you grab an iButton, top it up with credit, and then pour your own beer. Creatures of habit, will take comfort in knowing that two of the beers—Stone & Wood Pacific Ale and the Brookvale Union Ginger Beer, are the kind that stick around. Cheers to that!

Black Bunny Kitchen

An Alexandra Headland institution, Black Bunny Kitchen is one of the best craft beer bars on the Sunshine Coast to pull up a stool at. Sitting in between two of the Coast’s biggest restaurant hubs—the Esplanade and Ocean Street—Black Bunny is home to the Sunshine Coast’s largest menu of craft beers. We think that’s pretty impressive in itself. But then, throw in that they serve drool-worthy “handcrafted chews”, and a visit to this bar slash restaurant is a hole in one. Not sure what to swig? Rock up on a Thursday night and you’ll get to munch a Po Boy with a paddle of five beers to sample for a measly 20 bucks.

Black Water Trading Co.

Moffat Beach’s very own craft beer venue is the place to get your hands on a frosty one in Caloundra. With no mainstream lines available Black Water Trading Co. prides itself on being an independent player and rotates its six beers on tap regularly. Some of our faves include Holgate Brewhouse, Fortitude Brewing Co., and Riverside Brewing Co. The only downside to this watering hole? The ocean views are a total eyesore! I mean, who’d want to look at a beautiful beach!?

Flux Lounge

Noosa beer lovers are well looked after at Flux, along Gympie Terrace. Yep, along with the ridic water views, beer drinkers are granted access to a tasty line-up of cold crafts beers—think: Mountain Goat Beer Spring Ale and Newstead Brewing Co.’s Forbidden Fruit—that are poured. All. Day. Long. On top of the beer, we are all over the tapas-style dishes these guys serve up like sticky chicken ribs or Sichuan salted calamari. Mmmm!
