Hands up who loves a home-cooked Sunday roast? Uh-huh… We see yo’ hands waving like they just don’t care!
So when your parents ditch your regular weekend lamb feast for their annual P&O cruise, there’s no need to go crying under your doona with a slice of burnt toast. Nope, nope! Because this fine foodie region would NEVER let you down when it comes to a finger lickin’ good roast. And neither would we!
Round up your crew and tackle six of the best roasts on the Sunshine Coast with the help of this handy guide.
This fine foods eatery makes grandma’s famous family recipe look like something you’d rather serve to the cat. With a choice of a two or three-course meal, the Thursday roast night at Elliotts Bistro is epic. The menu gets a shake up each week, with dishes like the twice-cooked lamb shanks with pommes puree, roasted carrots, and navarin jus (we told you this was posh nosh!), and roast beef fillet, duck fat potatoes, broccolini, and Yorkshire pudding with sauce bordelaise making an appearance. And don’t get us started with the desserts. Who’s up for some caramelised lemon tart with vanilla bean ice cream and pistachio soil (wait, whaaat?), or how about a jersey caramel and dark chocolate brownie with raspberry sorbet? I die! I die!
Little Boat Espresso
The folk at Little Boat Espresso can do no wrong. And when it comes to a roast night, we always know we can count on them. From Moroccan pulled lamb shoulder and 12-hour slow-roasted brisket to braised beef short ribs, each week the Sunday night menu changes to include some kind of melt-in-your-mouth meat, innovative sides, a local cheeseboard and a craft beer. All for just $35 per person, we’re voting this as one of the best roasts on the Sunshine Coast.
If you go weak at the knees over quaintness and charm, then a Sunday drive to the historic Apollonian Hotel will have you throwing on a floral dress and singing Norah Jones songs with the windows down. This idyllic homestead-style pub—with a wrap-around verandah—has a rustic bush kitchen with a wood-fired spit roast of serious celebrity status (don’t forget your camera!). There’s also overflowing platters of gourmet salads, hot potatoes and damper. Book well ahead and get there early, as we're not the only ones who know about this family-friendly joint.
Coolum Surf Club
Let’s not beat around the bush. This is the Sunshine Coast and we are pretty relaxed folk here, right? We like to keep things simple and we certainly enjoy a cheap night out, especially on a Sunday night. So when it comes to Coolum Surf Club's $16.90 roast dinner, not to mention some of the best ocean views on the Coast, you’re winning before you’re even seated at your table. Bypass the fish and chips (you had that for lunch, anyway) and enjoy a pork, lamb, chicken, or Wagyu beef roast with all its trimmings, in all its glory. It may be cheap and cheerful, but you have this on record—there’s absolutely no buffet or bain marie-in sight (phew!).
Store your memories of mum’s pork roast, complete with crackling and served with cooked carrots and peas, in a special place where you can reflect on her fondly, but where they shall never be realised again. Enter: Via Italia's cheap-as-chips roast night! For 15 buckaroos, you can treat yourself on a Thursday night to the wafts and flavours of one of the best roasts on the Sunshine Coast. Oh and the portions here are not for the faint-hearted, so pack an empty stomach.
