One thing’s for sure—Sydney hasn’t been Sydney without Black Star Pastry’s iconic Strawberry Watermelon Cake.
This supreme square of almond dacquoise, rose-scented cream and watermelon, dressed in strawberries, pistachios and dried rose petals has, according to some of us, surpassed the lamington as Australia’s national cake. Usually, over a million slices of the Strawberry Watermelon Cake are served each year, so yeah—we love it. But, when Black Star shuttered operations due to the “Rona” back in March, things were, well, a lot less sweet than they used to be.
Basically, both Inner West stores will be open on Fridays (8am to 4pm) and Saturdays (9am to 4pm) for cake collection, coffee and croissants (chocolate, plain and ham and cheese).
Online orders have now reopened, so you’ll be able to pre-order your Strawberry Watermelon Cake in portion sizes of four to 45 (you know, just in case you really, really missed it).
If you prefer to live on the riskier side of life, there will also be some Strawberry Watermelon available to purchase in-store without pre-ordering. For now, dine-in will not be offered at Black Star's stores.
As for what’s next for Black Star, they’ll be adding on more cakes, additional opening hours, locations and trading days in the coming months. They’ve also got a brand new CBD store in the works, which was completed during lockdown—so stay tuned for more.
For now, you can get your pre-ordering done here.
Round up 9 of your best mates, these Sydney restaurants are open for dine-in.
