The wearable tech thing kicked off with the pretty uninspiring Google Glass—but it’s come a long way since then. Favouring style first and adding tech in as a practical but seamless element, is definitely the way to go (sorry, Google).
Proving that point is Ralph Lauren. The champion of innovation revealed its self-heating Polo 11 down jacket in January this year. The ground-breaking NASA-inspired outerwear arrived at a time when both puffy jackets and space travel fever were sky-rocketing to new heights.
The design is a rehash of Ralph Lauren’s 1997 Olympic athlete apparel—a jacket that was one of the most collectible items of the 90s. Fun fact: Mel B wears the '97 version in the film Spice World.
And as for the tech, it’s super impressive. Its silver lining disperses heat throughout the jacket, and heating is controlled via Bluetooth to the Ralph Lauren app. As well as basically being a very stylish, Neil Armstrong style electric blanket, the app also displays the weather outside.
The Polo 11 jacket is a limited edition, and it’s just dropped on HBX.com meaning you can have it shipped anywhere in the world for free. As a collector’s piece it’ll set you back a pretty penny (approximately $1,800), but for all your ski trips and snowy adventures to come—this one is worth the investment.
