We're not really sure if this is more exciting for vegans or meat lovers, so anyone and everyone, gather around while we tell you about these burgers.
For those of you who have been living under a rock, Leonardo DiCaprio is a hardcore sustainability activist, so when he invested in Beyond Meat, a company making plant based burgers that apparently look and taste just like real meat, we were all ears. It also didn't hurt to learn that Bill Gates was investing too, because if Bill Gates is in, it's gotta be good right?
From what we've heard, the burgers are so close to the real thing that they even 'bleed' when you cut them open (thanks to the beetroot in them). For hardcore vegans, this could almost be off-putting, but if you've recently gone vego and are missing your Friday night burger fix, or you're just a carnivore who is down for saving the planet, you're probably going to be all over these.
If you're worried about missing out on your protein hit, you'll be pleased to know they have just as much protein as a regular burger pattie, contain more iron and less saturated fat and cholesterol, so they're basically health in a bun, right?
Until now, they've only been available in restaurants in America, but they're joining Perth's dining scene this weekend and they're here to stay thanks to the vegan fast food chain Lord of the Fries.
For those of you not yet acquainted with Lord of the Fries, it's basically every vegetarian's dream come true—fast food style burgers, hot dogs, nuggets, milkshakes and everything else you can imagine, but all totally meat free and with plenty of vegan options too. Everything is also kosher, halal and preservative free, so everyone's a winner.
The Beyond Meat patties will be available in their original burger—with vegan cheese, lettuce, onion, pickle and their housemade Belgian mayo—or the spicy burger—with vegan cheese, lettuce, onion, Tobasco tomato sauce, jalapenos and chilli mayo—for those of you who can handle the heat.
Word on the street is that they're arriving in Perth today, so we have high hopes that they'll be on the menu this weekend, but keep an eye on their Facebook page to find out!
