I strategically choose my dog groomer based on its proximity to Johnny’s Burgers, despite Canning Vale being a 40-minute drive from my house—which means the shiz served here is A-grade and I am a certified addict.
With curly fries, burgers galore, American sodas and iced teas, wings, milkshakes, hot dogs and some crazy food challenges, this place can do no wrong.
The closest you’ll get to an American diner down under, Johnny’s Burgers is cool yet unpretentious—the kind of place which understands that free ketchup should be standard and (almost) everything should be topped with cheese.
It’s tough to save room for mains with Johnny’s epic list of sides which includes curly fries (our favourite), loaded fries, onion rings, cheese sticks, pizza rolls and spicy buffalo wings. Your best bet is to go with a group and order one of each for the table. Be sure to visit the drinks fridge to choose from the huge selection of American iced teas and sodas.
Johnny, the owner and chef (also of Frisch and Barc fame), has the whole burger thing down pat, and it’s no surprise as the brekky burger from Frisch and Barc is one of the best we’ve tasted.
There are plenty to choose from on the menu here, but our favourites include The Troublemaker with a juicy beef patty, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard and mayo with pickles on the side, The Big Buffalo stuffed with deep fried chicken, hot sauce, American cheese, cream cheese and coleslaw and The Cure with bacon, a bacon-infused beef patty (OMG), onion rings and, you guessed it, American cheese!
You’ll soon discover that, like the dessert stomach, humans are also equipped with a separate belly for burgers. Amazing!
If you’re up for a challenge, see if you can attempt to get yourself on the Hall Of Fame with one of Johnny’s burger challenges. Careful though, if you fail you will find yourself on the Hall Of Shame for all eternity.
Dessert comes in liquid form at Johnny’s because nothing washes all that greasy goodness down like a big American milkshake or a root beer float. We won’t judge you if you can’t fit it in, but you should definitely try the popcorn milkshake at least once.
And don’t worry if you’re busting out of your clothes by the time you’re ready to leave, Johnny’s Burgers stocks some really cool t-shirts that you can change into to hide your burger bump. We’ve got our eye on the tee with the burger pocket.
