Jumping on the health and fitness bandwagon this year? We’ve got you sorted with all the very best events to book into your calendar now so you can immerse yourself in the #Wellness and #Fitspo world. From the classic Perth races to philanthropic causes and the emergence of holistic festivals that will have you uplifted (instead hungover) the next day, we’ve rounded up the best of the best so you can pencil them in, start training and tick off some of those resolutions in 2018.
Here are the best perth health and fitness events you need to know about.
South West Yoga Festival
The first ever Yoga festival for the South West launches this weekend with a full day festival of conscious celebration going down on a private property overlooking Bunker Bay. Melding the mindful and spiritual, this inaugural festival will reset and refresh your mind, body and soul for the year ahead. From flow classes to drumming workshops, health talks and crystal meditation, even chakra dancing, expect to get downward dogging and syncing to high vibes, all in the name of yogic celebration!
The Perth Wellness Festival
Bare & Wilde has teamed up with EcoLuxe Events to bring us the first Perth Wellness Festival on 4 Febraury this year. If you like the sound of a day full of yoga, Pilates, wellness workshops, fresh coconuts and nourishing noms then this is one for you. Speakers from Sodashi Skincare, Wellineux and The Modern Day Woman will lead the wellness workshops and will leave you feeling refreshed and inspired.
When you think of Cottesloe beach, the first image that often springs to mind is tanned bodies baking on the white sand in high summer. Despite everyone knowing that we should fake not bake, melanoma is still on the rise and this year more than 14,000 Aussies will be diagnosed with it. While we’ve increased efforts to slip, slop, slap, we're still without a cure for the most common cancer in young Australians. On 8 April, our beloved Cottesloe beach will play host to the Melanoma March, with either a 5km walk or 10km run to support melanoma research, so you can skip the tanning and opt for fitness and charitable activism instead!
Wanderlust, the world’s only mindful triathlon event, might not reward you with a medal as you cross the finish line, but the intentional activity series will reward you with a heightened sense of wellness (sahhh on trend for 2018). With a reputation for bringing in expert teachers, spiritual leaders and musical masterminds, this is a celebration of all things epic in the mindful movement world. The holistic upgrade on a traditional triathlon includes a 5km run, outdoor flow class and a guided meditation.
Mother’s Day Classic
The largest community fundraising event for breast cancer research will be back again in 2018 so you can walk, run or skip your way around the 4km or 8km course in aid of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Bring family and friends along to honour and celebrate at the Tribute Wall set up in the Supreme Court Gardens before cruising the picturesque route around Riverside Drive in your prettiest of pink outfits!
Bridges Night Ride
Cycling the Swan River may be a classic “middle aged man in lycra” activity, but the Bridges Night Ride is set to change that on 9 June this year. Lighting up the night for the MSWA charity, this night-time ride will have you decking yourself out with reflective gear, strips, glow sticks and even Christmas lights, to join in on a 40km or 70km scenic route of the city. Thankfully, it will be so dark you can almost miss the obscene amount of tight lycra shorts…
Step Up For MSWA
Tackled Jacobs Ladder once and now feel ready to level up? Then meet your next challenge—the towering 1,103 stairs of Perth’s tallest building, Central Park. If you can bear the vertigo, get ready to run, climb, or even crawl if you must, your way to the top in support of MSWA. Super-fitties can go it alone otherwise (us sane folk) can enter as part of a team and face the 53 flights to conquer the vertical challenge on 17 June.
Lorna Jane Active Nation Day
Active Nation Day is fast becoming a staple in the Aussie Workout Calendar. Founded by home-grown activewear label, Lorna Jane Active, with a simple mission of helping us to move more, these events draw in the big crowds for outdoor boot camp sessions and fitspo celebrations, all in the name of sweating, celebrating and supporting healthy, active bodies. Dates are yet to be confirmed for 2018 but we have our fingers crossed!
City To Surf
The city’s most iconic race is set to return on 26 August, leaving you approximately seven months to prepare for that 42km marathon. Not into the long-distance thing? Don’t despair, this community filled event offers varying lengths for all fitness levels, from 4km, 12km to 21km, so you can walk, jog or party with the crowd on your way from the CBD to coast. And all that huffing and puffing won’t just be for your own personal achievement, flex your philanthropic muscle by fundraising for Activ or your favourite charity and put that sweat to good work.
After the success of the 2017 Spartan Race, we have our fingers crossed that Reebok and Spartan Australia will be bringing the world’s premier obstacle course back to the west. Far beyond your usual race, here you will face obstacles the whole way around the course to challenge your fitness, strength and mobility. From barbed wire crawls, to rope climbs and hoists, get yourself prepared now by not only conditioning your body (beware: burpees) but also your mind to tough it out! If you’re looking to sign up, get prepared with these handy hacks and survival tips and get into the Spartan state of mind!
Flow Festival, WA’s annual three-day celebration of yoga, music and healing arts is back to unite the community amidst the gum trees of Serpentine. With interactive workshops and yoga sessions, healing meditations and storytelling, it’s a touch woo-woo and whole lot uplifting. The more holistic take on a classic summer festy will feature inspirational teachers, foodies, body workers and healers, so get ready to get flowing, aligned and soulful! Dates are yet to be confirmed, but generally, the event runs near the summer solstice in December.
