Set within the modern and leafy surrounds of Perth’s restored historic heart, Hibernian Place, Arthur & Co is a bit of an inner-city escape. This new all day eatery is brought to us by industry stalwart Graham Arthur, whose list of past projects includes some of Perth dining’s most pivotal additions; Balthazar, Gordon Street Garage, Il Lido and Duende all had the Arthur touch.
The place is decked out in all kinds of cool—rattan chairs, block-coloured prints of ferns and fruit, and shelves lined with pickling jars and tinned goods—with serious mood lighting making the space feel welcoming but intimate. There are tables for two, booths, high tables and longer tables for group dining, making it a spot that feels equally comfortable for a wine after work or to settle in for dinner. Though, we suspect that once you see the menu, you’ll definitely be ordering up a storm.
The menu is seasonal, so you can expect imaginative (and actually pretty healthy) creations using good quality produce. We started with the cured salmon, which was dished up with blood orange, radish and linseed crisps for a bit of crunch, and the zucchini fritters, which were super crispy and delicious, especially when loaded up with the accompanying relish and labneh.
This led right on to the mains: ricotta gnocchi with green beans and kale, and the most succulent duck with plum, pickled beetroot and a light sweet potato mash. The very generous serving of gnocchi rests in a sauce that the chef makes from scratch – it has the appearance of a meat jus, but it’s actually entirely vegan, made from seasonal vegetables. With the green beans and crispy kale, plus a squeeze of lemon to top it all off, this dish is super fresh and rich in flavour. And the duck—oh, the duck—is exactly what duck should be. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, sweet and savoury at the same time. Delicious.
As far as sides go, the list is so good you’ll almost be wanting to order them all to share—but if you must narrow it down, go the dirty corn. It comes on the cob, slathered in sriracha mayo and covered in parmesan to boot.
Rather than read your dessert options off a menu, at Arthur & Co it’s all about visual appeal. The day’s selection reside in their ‘treat box’, which takes pride of place at the counter—choose whichever freshly made cake catches your stomach’s eye. We were blessed with a creamy and crunchy blueberry cheesecake and a seriously luxurious chocolate gateau, which you can only pray will be in the box upon your own visit!
With the winning combination of Hibernian Place people-watching, the Insta-worthy fit-out and a menu covering your all-day needs, Arthur & Co is definitely your new city-dining go-to.
