Mr Moustache isn't your typical 'grab a cocktail and a bite and go' kind of establishment, and if you head in thinking it is, you're in for a real treat. We get our Mexican and mezcal on at one of Sydney's best bars, Mr Moustache. What started out as a mezcal bar has turned into a local institution and a go-to spot for a fun night out.
Now, let's talk cocktails. There aren't many places that can say they have a global brand ambassador under its belt, but Mr Moustache certainly can. Mike Tomasic, winner of the 2014 Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge, can be found mixing things up behind the bar and crafting some crazy concoctions in the 'lab' behind the bar.
Everything you drink at Mr Moustache is made fresh; you won't find any sugar-laden spirits or synthetic ingredients here, but you will find an epic wall filled with spirits that are infused with fresh ingredients; chillies, mint, pineapple and more. Go in and have a chat to your bartender about what's going on behind the bar and let them mix you up something new. Try out the Clould People, with chile ancho-infused mezcal, pineapple and smoked sel de fleur; the perfect blend of spicy and smoky, with just enough salt to balance it out.
When you walk in to Mr Moustache you can see straight into the open kitchen and, just like the bar, everything is made from scratch. Food-wise, it's all about fresh, authentic flavours in bold, bright colours, and not a soggy enchilada or artificial flavour in sight!
We'd love to tell you there are some standout dishes at Mr Moustache, but pretty much everything on this Mexican inspired menu will knock your socks off. We kicked things off with a selection of platitos, bite-sized portions that are bursting with flavour and ordered one by one. The ensalada de sandia is a great place to start, and will definitely have you experiencing something new. The perfect blend of salty, refreshing and a hint of sweet, the salad features a generous chunk of watermelon with coriander basil pesto, prosciutto and lemon-dressed rocket. After you've whet your appetite with that, dive into the scallop aguachile, a beautifully fresh serving of sashimi scallop with lemon juice, green chillies and cucumber. Mix it all together and scoop with corn chips for a zesty and crunchy fiesta in your mouth.
