Beyoncé and Jay Z. Bacon and eggs. Summer and the beach. TV and Real Housewives… Some things are just meant to be together, but none more so than salt and caramel.
The burst of salty and sweet gets your palate bouncing and your taste buds tingling and, thankfully, it has become a major food trend so we can enjoy it at more places, more of the time. But for those on a fly-in/fly-out military style mission for their salted caramel fix, we’ve compiled a list of the best creations from Sydney’s best restaurants and cafés to satisfy your salty-sweet cravings.
Salted caramel milkshake
Marcelle, Potts Point
This is salted caramel in liquid form and we’re totally okay with this. We’re never people to shy away from a milkshake in the first place, so add salted caramel to the equation and we’ve definitely got a winner on our hands. Made with milk and ice cream, it’s rich, silky smooth, and delicious. If you’re a salted caramel lover and only have one milkshake this year (as if), make it this one.
Salted caramel and white chocolate ice cream
Gelato Messina, multiple locations
In the world of ice cream, Messina is king. Therefore it is no surprise that their salted caramel ice cream would make an appearance on this list. It’s creamy and salty with little chunks of salted caramel mixed throughout. All hail King Messina and the salted caramel ice cream!
Salted caramel popcorn
Jillian's Cakery, Surry Hills
There’s no doubt about it, when the 3pm slump hits, this is all we want to reach for. Massive rocks of popcorn clumped together with the most delicious and rich salted caramel you can dream of. You can buy it in store or online, so everyone can get their afternoon fill of deliciousness.
Doggs breakfast ice cream sandwich with salted caramel
Reuben Hills, Surry Hills
An ice cream sandwich with a fat dollop of salted caramel on the side. Need we say more? A wedge of vanilla ice cream sits snug between two pieces of chocolate cake looking incredible beautiful and so well put together as it hits your table, not that it will stay that way for long. The salted caramel served with it is generous and perfectly rich. Make today cheat day and enjoy the best ice cream sandwich you’re probably ever going to have.
Soft serve caramel ice cream with fries
Devon on Danks, Waterloo
Everyone had a moment in their childhood when they dipped their fries into their soft serve and experienced pure pleasure for the first time. Your parents would shake their heads but you could tell they were desperate to dive in and join you with the best chip and dip pairing ever. The folks at the new Sydney café, Devon on Danks, remember this moment very well and have raised the bar even higher, creating the silkiest caramel soft serve served with crispy, salty fries to dunk in. It’s a whole heap of wow in one dish. Get amongst it.
Salted caramel espresso martini
SoCal, Neutral Bay
Some would say that an espresso martini is a classic and you shouldn’t mess with the classics. These people obviously haven’t had the salted caramel espresso martini at SoCal in Neutral Bay. The bitter punch you get from an espresso martini is still there, but is lifted even further with the salted caramel that coats your mouth leaving a beautiful aftertaste. If you can manage to stop at one, we’ll be impressed.
Salted caramel and bitter chocolate pot with butter thins
You know when you eat something and there are so many flavours happening on so many different levels that all you can do is just close your eyes and savour every mouthful? This is one of those moments. The butter thins are the perfect vehicle to dip into these tasty little pots. The salty and sweet combination that re-awakens our taste buds is lifted to a sophisticated level by the rich bitter chocolate that adds depth to the sweet overtones of the caramel. An absolute knockout of a dish, we can’t recommend enough.
Salted caramel semi-freddo
So you’re at Ester, and because it’s Ester you have eaten so much of some of the best food in Sydney right now and you are thinking that maybe you don’t have room for dessert. First, stop lying to yourself, there is always room for dessert. But there is ESPECIALLY room for this salted caramel semi-freddo. The smooth dessert melts in your mouth and is all kinds of salty, sweet, creamy goodness. The sprinkling of black sesame on top adds a subtle hint of nuttiness, which makes this one of the best desserts in town.
Salted caramel gyoza with ice cream
Harajuku Gyoza, Potts Point
Salted Caramel. Gyoza. Ice Cream. We probably don’t need to say anymore for you to imagine how amazing this dessert is. You will ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ as the salted caramel oozes out of the lovely gyoza wrapping. After a plate (or five) you’re really left thinking is there anything that can’t be improved by being made into a gyoza?
Salted caramel cupcakes
Black Velvet, Darlinghurst
Our dessert dreams were answered when we stepped inside the award-winning Black Velvet Sydney. Tier upon tier of designer cupcakes, and walls lined with gourmet chocolates, we would happily live here if we could. Their signature salted caramel cupcake is so fluffy, so delicious you’ll want to pack a box to take home.
