2 Minutes with ... Dan Palmer

By Sophia McMeekin - 03 Jul 2013

He's known to many as a familiar face around Hawthorne, and he gets up at 4am most days to ensure his customers have only the freshest produce to choose from. We took 2 with Dan, one half of the team behind Hawthorne Garage, to find out why he's so excited to get out of bed so early in the morning.

TUL Note: Hawthorne Garage is a specialist grocery mecca, located on Hawthorne Road, with a decidedly old-fashioned approach to service and customers. This grocery store doesn't just have quality staples (though it does have those in droves) It also houses fresh flowers, a bakery, deli, butcher, DNA coffee, gluten-free, and organic products, and, of course, the freshest produce.

TUL: Describe in one sentence what you do for work?

I am the owner/operator of The Hawthorne Garage – Deli, Produce and Grocer.

TUL: What is the most exciting part of your job?

The challenge of constantly improving the store to making it one of the best food providores in Brisbane giving people inspiration, and in return seeing our customers coming back again and again!

TUL: Hawthorne Garage is about to celebrate its first birthday! Tell us what you have planned?

I am currently in the process of preparing a good old car park party with plenty of wicked activities for the kids to do as well as some fantastic gourmet goodness for the adults. No car park party is complete without a live band and a big BBQ.

TUL: What do you want people to get out of their experience when they shop at your store?

When you walk in to the shop you get a sense of appreciation for the old building which now houses the best produce, deli goods, grocer and the DNA espresso bar – the latest consumer culture loves this old fashioned style - coupled with fantastic food and great service.

TUL: What is one thing people should buy from a specialty grocer??

Great service, quality staple ingredients and few unique specialties for the gourmet guru at heart.
