He's responsible for some of the loveliest locks in Brisbane, and can blow dry like nobody's business. We took two with the man behind the manes, Luke Reynolds, to find out what makes him such a hair maverick.
TUL: You've had quite the journey to opening your own salon right here in New Farm. How did you get started in the hairdressing industry?
I had always cut and had an affinity with hair, but being a male I guess hairdressing wasn't really a natural career progression. After finishing up with my professional horse riding career and studying business I was persuaded by peers to give it a go.....
TUL: Why are you so passionate about fashion forward hair?
Because it is new, constantly evolving, fun, exciting and it's breaking boundaries!
TUL: Are you still quite involved in the fashion industry?
Absolutely. Personally I love fashion and our industries are very closely related. We travel to Sydney every year to work on the KMS hair team for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, I have directed hair here in Queensland for David Jones as well as shooting editorial work.
TUL: What has been the highlight of your career so far?
The entire journey! This ride has been amazing and life changing.
TUL: How do you want women to feel after they've been to your salon?
Beautiful, sexy and happy!
TUL: What's the secret to a perfect blow-dry?
The right product, brushes and good technique!
TUL: You have a very loyal client base who love your work; how do you keep them coming back?
In small business this is always tough, but I think if you do great work, are consistent, happy, driven and always try to go above and beyond you're on a winner.
TUL: What's your hair philosophy?
Hair that is in great condition, makes you feel beautiful, works with you, is fashion forward- not necessarily what's on trend!
TUL: Which hairstyles should every women perfect?
The ones that work for them and make them feel confident and amazing!
TUL: What's your favourite product right now?
KMS Playable texture! It's a light hairspray and wax in one, giving you the ability to make the most out of your hairstyle for volume, texture and shape. Amazing technology, It's incredible and not like anything I've worked with before and it's so versatile! Everyone needs it!
TUL: What's one makeup trick every woman should know?
Not to wear too much! There's nothing worse!
TUL: What's the best part of your job?
The travel and experiences! Seeing the joy on people's faces when you've made them feel better, just for doing your job! I also do a lot of education work, when imparting your knowledge and the recipient has a 'ah ha' moment that's pretty awesome, just to name a few!
TUL: What's the worst part of your job?
Trying to convince clients that are stuck in their ways to have a change… and rude people- but thankfully we encounter very few of them!
TUL: What does a typical day look like for you?
Wow, it depends on the day! Whether I'm working in or out of the salon, away or at home. Generally though it starts with a training session of sorts, a ride/run or session with my trainer. Followed by a healthy breaky then a full on day of hair/education/travel. Never a dull moment!
TUL: What's next for you and Luke Reynolds Hairdressing?
We have a lot on this year! As well as our normal workload in the salon I'm working between here and Hong Kong. Fashion Week in Sydney, a national tour for KMS Education our premier stylist Kathy is heading to Sydney to work on hair for the Voice Australia...plus lots of competitions and busily growing the business and improving ourselves!
TUL: What are the key trends for hair in 2014?
Colour, strong shape and texture...
