So, you made a new year’s resolution to save some cash this year but January's rocked around faster than expected and your social life requires some immediate attention. The holiday season got away from you, and whether you spent large on cocktails or just mountains of gingerbread, we aren’t here to judge your past choices—simply to encourage your future ones.

Here's a round-up of all the best free (or nearly free) events on in Brisbane this January.

Good Intentions NYD Party At XCARGO

Make your way to XCARGO for their New Year’s Day party celebrating all the good intentions you have for 2019. They will be opening their doors for one and all to come on in and enjoy the live tunes to start of the new year, with entry totally free.

4ZZZ Hot 100 Hangout

Another free New Year’s Day party will be hosted by 4ZZZ as they leave 2018 behind by playing the hottest hits of the past year. Join them for their hot 100 countdown broadcast which will be 9 hours of dunk tanks, games, jumping castles, and quality tunes as they pull off the longest ever outdoor broadcast on live radio.

New Year’s Day Parkrun

How many years have gone by with you making the resolution to be healthy, then giving up as soon as someone offers you a free KitKat? This cannot go on, we must break the cycle of half-hearted resolutions together, and what better time to start than on New Year’s Day itself? Get your heart rate up and sweat off the 2018 cocktails with an 8:30am park run.

City Sounds

ICYMI, Brisbane has been rolling out free shows every week from both local and touring artists. Popping up in either Queen Street Mall, Post Office Square, or other well-known Brisbane stages, the performances span pop, jazz, folk, classical, and all other genres under the sun. Coming up this month we have Christian Patey, Eli, Raasa, Peter Hunt, Fishlane and more, check out the schedule for details on the next free show.

RSPCA Pop-Up Adoption Drive

Alright, so this one isn’t totally free, but being able to hang around cute little fur balls all day for just a gold coin donation is a pretty good deal. The RSPCA will be holding a pop-up adoption to give hundreds of homeless dogs and cats loving homes. It’s a great place to get vet advice, pet products, and information about adoption, or just an adorable place to spend your day and maybe go home with a new family member.

Eat Street Northshore

Staying strong in 2019, Eat Street will still be serving up the Instagramable eats we know and love. Once again, this one has an itty bitty entry fee that is less than a fiver, but once you’re in you’ll find live performances from local and touring bands, edgy showmen, cabarets and more that is totally free to enjoy (plus if you’re on a real budget there are plenty of free samples to put the eat in your street).

APT9 At QAGOMA

QAGOMA can always be counted on to bring us some quality free entertainment, and their current exhibition is definitely worth checking out for an arvo of ambitious art. The 9thAsia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (or APT9 for short) showcases all the recent signature pieces from all over the Asia Pacific in an explosion of colour, light, and cross-cultural creativity.

Meditation Courses

The new year is a great time to practice mindfulness, and the Australian School of Meditation and Yoga will be setting you off on the right path in the second week of January. Sign up for an initial free meditation course to learn the art of clearing your mind.

Dress Code Exhibition At Museum Of Brisbane

Ending at the end of January is the Museum of Brisbane’s free exhibition, Dress Code. It showcases five contemporary artists as they explore how our culture, gender, and historical identity influences our fashion choices. Make sure you check it out before it shuts up shop for interesting commentary on the role fashion plays in our cultural identity.

The Sound Society

Brisbane’s go-to free event each month is The Sound Society, a free live music program brought to you monthly in Roma Street Parklands. Bring a picnic blanket and relax amongst the lush greenery of your surrounds as you listen to a morning set. Playing in January will be Cowbird at the Amphitheatre, creating the perfect BYO brunch occasion with free tunes and gorgeous views.

Rooftop Yoga

Lululemon is throwing a free yoga session on the rooftop of WeWork right in the middle of January to keep you going on your 2019 resolutions. Everything you need they will have so all you have to do is book your spot and turn up to join in the morning flow from up high in the Brisbane landscape.
