How To Propose | Our Tips

I have never been the proposer, but I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out that proposing can be tricky business. There's the ring pressure, the planning, the secrecy, and, of course, your own emotional rollercoaster to navigate.

We feel for the guys (and girls!) that are faced with this perilous situation, so we put our heads together to come up with some tips to take a bit of the guesswork out of the whole down-on-one-knee scenario.

Know your audience

When it comes to making the ultimate declaration to your lady, it pays to keep in mind the type of person she is. A bit shy? Probably best to steer clear from big, public scenes (no stadium scoreboards, please). Scared of the ocean? Perhaps taking her on a scuba dive and proposing 300 metres under water may not be the best plan. Play it safe and, if in doubt, keep it simple.

Keep it a surprise

Seriously. Please, do this. There is nothing more special than being proposed to when you least expect it. Do your research, make a plan, and keep cool. Don't give the game away!

Timing is everything

So, you've got this big, romantic proposal planned and you're excited. We get it. But, proposing to your beloved on the same day that you've run over her dog or she's been given the sack might not be the fastest route to a happy ending. If in doubt, wait.

Alcohol, please

Champagne is to proposals like bacon is to a burger. Essential. Whether to get her feeling relaxed before you pop the big question (and to calm your nerves), or to celebrate afterwards, a bottle of bubbly (or two) is a no brainer.

Ask her parents

I know, I know, it's old fashioned and you don't need her dad's permission. You're both grown ups, etc. Whatever. Just ask her parents, because it's the NICE thing to do. And you're a nice guy, after all. She will be pleased, we promise.

Have a back up plan

Worst-case scenario. She says no. Have a convenient escape route planned (or a trusty friend on speed dial) and high-tail it to the nearest bar.
